Well I've been reading these forums off and on for a while now and I guess it's about time I joined.

I'm 22 now and I'd say I'm probably a NW3 with diffused thinning. I'm not sure when I started loosing it because I have always had a high hairline as far back as I can remember... when I was 16 I had what you would probably consider a NW2. I never thought I was going bald back then, I always just dismissed it as my natural hair line because my father has always had a high/receded hair line but still has a good head of hair in his mid 50s.

I started noticing the hair loss (shedding) shortly after I turned 21 and then one day I caught a glimpse of my crown with wet hair and was shocked by how badly my hair had thinned. I went to a dermatologist. He told me I had Telogen Effluvium(caused by stress) and male pattern baldness. He suggested propecia and minoxidil. I got on the meds and added some nizoral. For a while stopped obsessing about my hair loss situation and my hair seemed to improve. I wish i took pics back then but I had some pretty bad diffused thinning going on and it did thicken up some after a few months, the hairline didn't change though.

Fast forward to today and it seems like I'm back to baseline... it's hard to tell without pictures to compare to but it seems like my temples are receding even more. I started on dutas about a month ago and I have been taking .5mg dutas and 1.25mg finasteride daily. I know that seems a bit redundant but I wasn't sure if the dutas were legit. Around the same time I started using rogaine foam with retin-a on the temples. I'm afraid that T is killing the front and not just DHT. Just a few weeks ago I got some spironolactone pills and I crushed up a few and put in minoxidil (damn that stuff smells bad!) There's probably a better way to make topical spironolactone but I'm not sure what 'vehicle' to use and where to get it. I also started taking licorice root herbal supplements a few weeks ago in hopes to lower T levels but I decided to stop taking it because of possible side affects. Nothing I've tried so far has given me any sides that people complain about aside from a flaky scalp caused by the minoxidil. I guess I could use the licorice extract pills to make a topical... the pills are easy to pull apart and there's just ground up licorice root inside.
I feel a little silly trying all these 'treatments'... it feels like just the new snake oils of today, but I'm desperate.

I'm starting to think that dutas may be causing my hairline to worsen...
It seems like my temples have been receding even more in the past month and worse yet it seems like my left temple is receding more than my right!

your temples are receeded, but the overall quality of hair is still good.

try minoxidil on the temples and it might give you some regrowth. GL!

Re: Defeated's story (with pictures)

Thanks for the replies. You can see the thinning better from the top view here... It's dry in this picture but it looks a whole lot worse when wet. I've been using minoxidil on the temples for a while with no improvement. I don't think it's likely to get much regrowth on my temples short of a hair transplant, but I don't think I would be a good candidate for that at my age :(.

And yes, the name does kind of reflect the way I feel/am at the moment. It's not just the hair loss (although that's a huge part of it). I went from having a purpose and being too busy to be worrying about my hair loss to unemployed, alone, and having way too much time on my hands to assess the damages and think about my bleak future. It never mattered much to me before but hair has become a point of fixation for me.

as I said, the quality of your hair still seems to be good, even you want to fill in the temples, consider hair transplant.

Give what RaginDemon suggested a go and stick to it for 6 months whether you see an improvement or not. Get on propecia if necessary. Be persistent. All the best.

Thanks.
notself, I said in my original post that I have been on finasteride for a little over a year now. Perhaps it wasn't clear... I did write it at 3am. I've decided to stop the dutas and just take 1/4 proscar a day.
Do you really think hair transplant is a viable option considering that I am only 22? What if i got one and I continued to recede?
