Throughout the last 9 years, I have been on an intense fight in stopping hairloss. It was at age 18 when things started to progress and I began to thin. It was 1997 and I had recently graduated from high school. I had thick, I mean thick long and curly dark hair. My graduation picture showed me with my cap and this massive fro underneath. It was truely nice.

Following my graduation and the entrance into college life, I began to show signs of thinning. My hair started to fall out and I was in shock. Despite my father being completely bald and he did at a relatively young age, I never thought that I could start losing my hair so young. As a nieve young teenager, I really didn't know what to do. It wasn't until I had a checkup at the doctors office that I decided to ask him about my hairloss. Fortunately, I did because as a young doctor himself showing signs of hairloss, he recommended that I start taking propecia. Propecia was fairly new to the market but showed promising results in hairgrowth and maintenance in their trials. I decided to take it to at the very least curb or stop this dreadful pain.

Since then, I have been taking propecia. Yeah, nearly 9 years. Amazing! I can say beyond a doubt that I attribute propecia and curbing my hairloss to many successes in my life. What I mean is that by being so young and living in a materialistic society where many judge things based off of appearances, I truely believe that that if I was bald, I could not have been able to appreciate all that I have in life. I felt very fortunate. The woman, especially, the woman, jobs, school, making connections and everything else that could be tied to ones appearance. Don't get me wrong however, I was still hiding this dreadful thinning on my crown and front. Fortunately, my hair, curly and dark could sort of hide those thinning spots. But for how long? I was also very uncomfortable when my hair was wet. The balding spots where extremely noticeable when my hair was wet. It looked detestful and I was in fear of many people to notice.

Until recently, things have been great. It wasn't until May or June that I began noticing more and more hair falling out. I was scared sh*%less. I thought that it was just a phase and it would stop. Consequently, it seemed that propecia had now lost its effectiveness. I was also frightened because I was flying overseas to see my girlfriend and I didn't want her to see me at this phase.

I continued the use of propecia until September. It wasn't until I found this forum in August that I was able to change my regimen based on the great advice I was given by many people. I now realized that things have progressed in the hairloss business and more could be done. How wonderful and a relief it has been for me to be able to discuss with others going through the same problem. Since joining, I have changed my regimen to dutasteride, 5% minoxidil, nizoral, and folligen. I have been on these meds for about a month and half except the dutasteride and nizoral and see some slight improvements. Hopefully, with continued use, I can achieve more.

I will post some pics as soon as I get a new dig cam adapter. The battery is dead. Ha! Thanks to everyone who has helped me progress in fighting this stage of hairloss. Updates to come....

great story dem.

getting on dutasteride was the best idea for you, definitely, once finasteride was no longer doing the trick.

what norwood would you say you are by the way?

good luck with the dutasteride and i hope you update this frequently

Thanks Jayman for all your help. I would say that I probably started on the dutasteride because of your recommendations. Thanks again.
I think its a bit difficult for me to classify where I exactly fit in. At my current state, I have moderate diffuse crown thinning and slight-moderate front thinning. I would probably say somewhere along the lines of a 3v-3.5v. There isn't a full complete bald spot anywhere, just a lot of thinning.

I would say that in the month of July-August, I was certainly pushing a 4 and a diffuse one at that. It was terrible. The hairloss progressed a lot. Fortunately now however, because I feel that I am a fairly good responder to these meds, I have thickened up a bit. The hairs in the crown and front have definately thickend a bit of new regrowth. It was most likely the minoxidil and folligen helping. I have only been on dutasteride for 11 days.

Definately a rapid progression. It was a very agressive hairloss when I was 18-19. I most likely whent from a 1-3v in a couple months.

I had just graduated high school. I really can't remember whether or not it was before or just during the beginning use of propecia but most likely before.

Yes, 27.

Wow that sucks. At least you were monitoring it this year so you caught the sudden thinning this time.

It always sucks when it happens fast because you can't learn about the medication, get a script, and get it in time to stop it from progressing. :(

Whats your complete family history of balding like? Im talking like back to the grandparent level if youknow it.

My fathers side has a nasty history of hairloss. I believe that my father, my grandfather and my uncle had lost their hair very young. Most likely at the age of 22 or less.

On the other hand, on my mothers side, just the opposite. My grandfather had hair into his 70's. My uncle, probably in his mid to late 40's still has thick hair. Why couldn't I get those genes?

Jayman, how has thing progressed on your dutas regimen? You have been on that for a couple months now? I see that you added cocaine. Nice touch. Ha!

No kidding bro? My genetic history is almost exactly the same. My maternal grandpa has a full head of hair almost in his early eighties and his father had a lot of hair into his sixties. My mom's brother, my uncle is like a Norwood 1.5 at age 55. My dad on the other hand is a nw4.5 ish at 50 and his dad was a nw6 in his 60s.

As for the dutas, I've been on avodart or dutas for a month now. I'm still seeing regrowth in my hairline and temples but no real regrowth in the front where I am diffusing or in my crown. I am diffusing all over the top and I guess I should be fortunate that it hasn't gotten any worse since July. I attribute the regrowth to the finasteride and not the dutasteride since I noticed it 4 days after starting dutasteride and nothing happens that fast. I am hoping that since I saw regrowth in an area notoriously hard to regrow, the hairline/temples, from finasteride, that I will regrow some of my front and some of my crown with the stronger Avodart.

I am holding off on the minoxidil for now to see what dutasteride can do for me but if I am not satisfied in a few months then I will add the minoxidil.

I would say that at the very least, I find this forum extremely helpful and do appreciate it greatly. Thank you. Forgive me, but at the moment after a few beers and a night out in the city, I feel that I must write down and use this space to discuss how my latest progress has been going.

The past few months have been very difficult for me as I have noticed a more rapid progression in my hairloss. It wasn't until August however, that things began to change for the better with a new regimen in place. Its been a month and a half now that I have been on 5% minoxidil and have notced new hairs along my hairline and crown region. I am very fortunate for that. Furthermore, I feel that the folligen has also helped improve hair quality and thicken up the hairs on my scalp. Thus far, I have been through a few minor sheds lasting only a few days. I would say that about 20 hairs or less have been falling out during this period. I could be completely mistaken, but those are the ones I notice.

Currently, I feel like I am in one of those shedding stages and have noticed a few hairs with bulbs attached that have fallen and other hairs which are thicker. I am hoping that this is a good sign. Overall, I am fairly content with the way things have been progressing with the hair on my head. I only hope that things will get better although I am having a bit of difficulty with the folligen irritating my scalp in combination with the minoxidil.

When the folligen is applied after a short time (prob an hour) after the minoxidil and sets in, I feel irritation. I scratch, which probably isn't good but is very tempting. I wonder if this irritation and scratching is helping to induce more shedding?

Well, all I can do is hope for the best. Thus far, I am not dissapointed and will continue to do what I can to curb my hairloss.

thanks,great story

it's always nice to hear from people that have been fighting thinning/balding for many years and definately when they have been quite succesfull at it.

keep us updated

I also have the curly hair, I have been on propecia for about two years now (almost) and I'm maintaining. Seven extra years would be awesome.

good luck with the regimen-switch...
