Does finasteride increase Testosterone and is the hairline at risk?

My hairline has been going since on finasteride for 5.5 months. I am not saying it wasn't going before finasteride but it seemed after the shed it was way worse. I know I am about at the time for another hair cycle to come in and maybe it will fill back in but I am losing hope.
Basically, does finasteride hurt the front more than it helps?

I have everything staked in the answer to your question. I have very little to no crown or vertex loss, I am taking finasteride just to stop temporal and hairline recession (I'm a NW2). If it is counter-productive, then I'm screwed.

The study on finasteride on the front in the HairLossTalk.com Resources should soothe you - it indicated finasteride's effect was great on the front. Go check it out.

I gotta admit, I'm a tad worried that taking finasteride will decimate my front and, if it does, I will have been worse off than if I didnt take it at all because I simply dont need help with the crown and vertex.

killbill,
I'm in the exact same position as you. I'm diffuse in the front and I just jumped on finasteride + nizoral. Well, I think it will work there or maintain but it's a risk, it is.

I'm 6 months in and finasteride has done nothing for my hairline, I still think its made it worse and I do think that is do to testosterone uplift. I'm thinking of dropping finasteride for a couple of weeks and checking how much hair I lose. Its so bad that I can see my hair getting worse after every wash.

finasteride works everywhere, it's a myth that it doesn't work at the front. However, the increased haircounts obtained at the front were a lot less impressive than those obtained at the crown. There's a study posted on the hairlosstalk resource library.

Finasteride in the treatment of men with frontal male pattern hair loss

Background. Finasteride, a specific inhibitor of type 11 5a-reductase, decreases serum and scalp dihydrotestosterone and has been shown to be effective in men with vertex male pattem hair loss.
Objective: This study evaluated the efficacy of finasteride 1 mg/day in men with frontal (anterior/mid) scalp hair thinning.
Methods: This was a 1-year, double-blind, placebo-controlled study followed by a 1-year open extension. Efficacy was assessed by hair counts (I CM2 circular area), patient and investigator assessments, and global photographic review.
Results: There was a significant increase in hair count in the frontal scalp of finasteride treated patients (P < .001), as well as significant improvements in patient, investigator, and global photographic assessments. Efficacy was maintained or improved throughout the
second year of the study. Finasteride was generally well tolerated.
Conclusion: In men with hair loss in the anterior/mid area of the scalp, finasteride 1 mg/day slowed hair loss and increased hair growth.

I've seen your posts and your case is one that makes me lose sleep, but your libido boost is what makes me question your case...not that I think you're full of it, just it makes me think you may be having some reflex hyperandrogenicity OR you have a frontal scalp incredibly sensitive to testosterone.

As for me, I had the initial libido boost but right now it has plummeted. That whole area down there tingles (not in a good way!) and feels like its shriveling. Barely 6 weeks in, though, so I'm gonna ride it out and see that it goes away.

Of course, I'm studying for the Bar Exam right now and I don't expect my libido to be doing cartwheels with all this stress....

Same here, I've slowly seen my hairline get thinner and I'm in about the 7th week of using Propecia. Hopefully it's just kicking out thin or soon to be thin hairs which would of been gone anyways in a year and regrowing them thicker... hopefully that is.

I think the resting phase is usually 2-3 months for hair so we'll see in another month or two if it gets better...

In the 6 months I have used it I feel finasteride has destroyed my hairline. Like Nick I think it could have to do with the Test surge that finasteride creates. My advice would be to use a topical anti androgen like spironolactone as a precaution!

My hairline was receding fast (NW2 to NW3 in a year or so) before I got on Propecia. The recession stopped in its tracks. I've been on Finasteride for over 4 years. No more recession.

Propecia is good for the hairline.

revivogen is not an androgen receptor blocker. They say it is, but that is based on the saw palmetto. Revivogen is most potent for working like propecia.

the eucapil and spironolactone are androgen receptor blockers, though.
