Does hair shaft diameter increase as hair grows longer?

Haven't been able to find an answer to this question.

In the anagen phase, do hairs get thicker ie an increase of shaft diameter as the hair gets longer

From my observation with a USB digital microscope that's true. Hair gets thicker and darker as it grows longer.

I believe that it goes through cycles, but having it too short probably won't maximize the diameter. When the hair is long and heavy enough, it droops down and I believe generally healthy hair will be strengthened by this.
