Does Low T really cause hair to fall?

I think that’s pretty paradoxical: at the end of the day, T is an androgen, which converts into DHT (the main cause of hair loss in those who are genetically prone). On the Internet I found some threads about guys who experienced hair loss although having low T

And I’m worried ‘cause I’m doing everything I can to lower my T, don’t want to find out it turns out to be useless and counterproductive

DHT is a paracrine hormone (just like E2), which means it is produced locally in tissues where it is needed (i.e. hair follicles). Higher serum levels of T correlate with higher serum levels of DHT (see here), but higher serum levels of T do not correlate with higher peripheral levels of DHT (see here). In other words, lowering your T levels will not have any impact on the DHT levels in your scalp. One theory is that because of the lowered systemic androgenic load, the body chases homeostasis by upregulating peripheral production of DHT by means of increasing 5AR-activity.

Of course, there is a certain threshold below which there is not enough T to sustain that peripheral production of DHT. Since this threshold is not reached with physiological levels of T (i.e. >200ng/dL, as per above study), you would have to severely surpress your T levels in order to achieve this. That has been done a few times on this website, the threads are readily available. Such measures would have great consequences for your health and are therefore not recommendable.
