Does oily hair cause hair loss?

Hi people.

I feel that sebum excretion is the cause of hair loss. At least in my case I couldn't help but notice how oily it is and I have acne as well. I can't help but notice that the people I see who have thick fluff of hair typically have dry hair and skin.

Has anyone noticed the same thing? Does anyone also suffer from an oily scalp and hair loss? In theory if we can minimize the oil excretion on the scalp we can minimize our hair loss and possibly promote hair growth.

Anyone please share your experiences.

not an expert, but i would think an oily scalp is the first sign you have a lot of test. in your system, and i'm sure that would mean you have a lot of dht in there.

Im not an expert i just play one on hairloss sites. I think Ams is somewhat right. I know when i first started losing my hair in 1996 my hair was so freaking greasy and oily every day i could almost wring the grease out of it at the end of the day. Ever since i started propecia ive never had an oily or greasy scalp one day since.

We need to educate you guys. Im failing as a mother!!!!!

Oily scalp and inreased sebum production in relation to male pattern baldness is a hallmark of the hormonal changes going on in the scalp. Its very common. This is why any successful hair loss treatment regimen should contain a scalp conditioner that includes an antifungal and anti-inflammatory.

This is exactly why Nizoral is recommended for every regimen.

Once you go on Propecia, you can tend to see even more oily skin on your face and even eyelashes sometimes, from the temporary increased testosterone. This goes away after a week or so.

Except for the extremely small amount of people who's scalp gets insanely itchy with it. Like me.

I did a little 6 week trial and error with diff types of minoxidil and shampoos and I am 100% sure it's the Nizoral.

Oh well, T/GEL & T/SAL for me.

Cassin did you ever try Nizoral 1%? I find Nizoral 2% too harsh.

I was using Nizoral 1%. It made my scalp go to hell when using it. I bet there are a few more people out there that have this problem and blame it on the minoxidil.

I cycled and did a lot of trial and error to find out exactly what was wrong.

Propecia ultimately dries you out a little.

During the first few weeks it oils you up though. (No comments zimmy).

People who had incredibly oily skin before Propecia sometimes report a great normalization of their oiliness and their skin clears up dramatically.

People who had normal skin before Propecia (like myself and you Cassin), can report bone dry, itchy, irritated skin.

hmmmmmmm

So let's say I wasn't using Propecia, and was using just Nizoral with the minoxidil I would be fine? (Not that I plan on dropping it, just curios)

That's interesting. I suspected that high sebum excretion is a cause of hair loss. Not directly but I believe that the oil on the scalp provides ample food for PBacteria which when they consume the oil creates havoc due to its acidic byproducts. This seems like a cause of dandruff. I couldn't help but notice that I started getting dandruff, then psoriasis, then acne, then seboric dermatitis, progressively in that order about 10 years ago at age 23 and during that time I recall that it became progressively worse and I was losing hair.

Funny, I used to think I had dry scalp from all the flakes and clumps of skin on my scalp that would come off and my scalp would be red. I even tried H&S dry scalp formula which worked actually but I now stopped using it opting for nizoral and TSal instead. I now believe that its the oil that causes the flakes and serb derm and not a dry scalp condition.

What I notice also is that now that I have my acne under control (thru dietary changes - don't believe it for a minute when derms say their is no link to diet) my face isn't as oily and I notice that I don't have psoriasis and serb derm anymore. And little to no dandruff. Mind you I do use Nizoral but wouldn't give it all the credit. On days when I haven't washed my hair in a while and my hair gets oily I noticed my scalp gets itchy and scratching noticeably detaches hairs with what appears to be a sebum bulb at the end. I experimented washing my hair gently 2x a day and keeping the scalp clean and seems my hair loss count goes down from 25+ hairs in the shower to 5 hairs in the shower. Lately to prevent the itch I occasionally get I have tried applying a sulphur resorcinal cream (used for acne but should work for scalp since it's skin also) on my scalp where I see heavier than usual sebum after showering. This helps cosmetically to reduce the shine but also the cream absorbs the oil and is anti bacterial so should help to control P Bacteria population on my scalp. This seems to be helping to control my hair loss.

But controlling the loss isn't enough. I also feel I am not getting enough growth and the growth that comes seems to be fine hair. I went on a near vegatarian diet in April this year and my weight dropped drastically and I wasn't even trying to lose weight and my acne was at its worst. This was the time I lost the most hair.

My goal is to increase density and hair diameter. Short of minoxidil, has anyone had success with the following products
Arginine - The science says it works but does it really? The users who have added this in their regimen seems uncertain.
Emu oil - I have a hard time believing adding this messy oil can actually help although there has been research reports that on its own it can help reactivate telogan hairs to anagen phase.
Scalp exercises - I laughed at first but now I'm no sure. There may be something to this. hairloss-reversable.com

It is doubtful any dietary supplements can help increase density. But some should help hair diameter. Can anyone advise what has worked for them. I have been taking about 20 different supplements including MSM and gelatin for about 5 months now but honestly can't tell if its really helping.

Some shampoos and topicals can help increase density. Can anyone advise what has worked for them. I already use nizoral and wish to avoid minoxidil for now. How long has it taken for you to notice?

As a side note, has anyone noticed that when your scalp was oily that your hair seems to grow faster? And possibly thicker? Now that my scalp is not as oily it seems the hair is not growing as fast. Coincidence?

I combined nizoral with Tsal today, and it worked nicely. (basically copying Dr. Lee's Shampoo). nizoral alone makes my scalp extremely itchy, and my hair flat. I mainly use Tgel as an everyday shampoo.
