As well all know, Hairloss means you lose alotta hair, you should see my comb, its likes a jungle.

anyway, my real question was

Does Rogaine prevent the shedding?

Im asking this because Im going to see a dermatoligist in a month, for some propecia and advice. I was wondering if it would be smart to buy some rogaine for now, cause my vertex is looking terrible.

NO it does not stop shedding. minoxidil may cause increased shedding for a time on its own.

Rogaine alone can prevent hairloss, and stimulate regrowth in "bald areas". So, yes, it would be smart to buy some. However, it can cause initial shedding, it might take several months to work or might not work at all, your chances to slow down/stop/regrowth are higher with than without it.

It stopped my shedding. I have had slight hair loss for several years, and in the last 2-3 years it had become noticibly thin on the top/crown of my head (in addition to a bit of a receeding hairline). About 3-4 months ago I started noticing excessive hair loss on my pillow each morning. I decided to give the Costco/Kirkland brand 5% minoxidyl a try. After 3 months of use my shedding has virtually stopped and 60-70% of my hair has returned. I still have the same receeding hairline, but I haven't tried really applying any there. I did not have some of the reported side effects---burning sensation, puffiness, but I have noticed my eyebrows are growing a bit further down towards my cheeks! That's OK---I can shave/wax that in exchange for more hair on the top of my head!

same here, been on finasteride for 9 mos. and 5% minoxidil for 3 mos. and I've lost virtually NO hair for 2 mos. My hair just feels very tight and strong these days.

I'd try that minoxidil on the hairline too, it's giving me TONS of thick vellus and new terminal hair. It helped to really give my finasteride results a strong push. It's really working it's mojo for me.

I just started applying the minoxidil to my hairline a couple of days ago. But now I'm wondering if that's such a good idea. I'm not that upset by my hairline (just a widow's peak, really) and I'm wondering if any re-growth there will be noticable and maybe even ugly in the initial stages? what does the re-growth in completely-bald areas look like anyway?

wait until you have been taking finasteride for at least a year before adding minoxidil to the hairline

The active ingredient in Rogaine, minoxidil, is known to revitalize follicles, keep them healthy, and help promote new growth.

It can certainly be said that minoxidil helps to deal with male-pattern baldness, and it will probably help to prevent hairloss in future, as well as regrow hair.

I like the stuff. :)

And, I did experience a small shed in the beginning, but that has now passed and I don't shed anymore.

I'm only using minoxidil right now. I've been on it for only 3 months and already my hair is thicker than it has been for 15 years. Other than the widow's peak I have up front, my hair has returned to probably 70-80% of it's 'old' thickness I had in my early 20's.

What does finasteride do that minoxidil does not? Did I make a mistake by not using finasteride first?

Finasteride combats male pattern baldness from the root of the problem, DHT.

Minoxidil doesn't inhibit the formation of DHT, so you're body is still trying to go bald, but the minoxidil is keeping your hair alive by other means.

It's complicated, really.

No, you're OK.

However, minoxidil does not stop the balding process, it merely provides an offset of growth, thus thickening up your hair but not stopping the underlying cause for your hair loss. Minoxidil treatment is a bit like painting over rusty patches on a car. It will make it look acceptable but the rust has not been treated thus the process continues underneath.

finasteride will reduce the amount of DHT in your body and scalp which will hopefully halt your male pattern baldness and maybe even regrow some hair in places you lost it.

The combo of the two work together in synergy to have an even better effectn on your hair. Get on the finasteride and you should see some really fantastic results by the sound of it.

If you just stay on minoxidil you may see your results drop off in the 3rd year.

Whatever you do, don't stop the minoxidil now otherwise you will lose your gains quite quickly.

Do some research on Finasteride (propecia or proscar) on this site and make your choice. Sounds like you have a good chance of getting your hair back to something near your non-balding days.

There are plenty of good people who will answer any questions you have on this site.

Cheers

So in other words, the hair you've maintained with minoxidil are for the most part fake? Meaning, they probably couldn't be maintained with finasteride or anything but minoxidil?

I 've been on minoxidil for a few years and it's not working anymore. Will finasteride save those hairs or are they coming out no matter what?
