Dropping to 0.5mg Finpecia (Due to SIDES)

Hello, I recently took 1mg of Finpecia for 2 weeks and developed pretty bad sides (low sex drive/ED). I stopped taking Finpecia for 2 weeks after and now Im back to normal.

However, I still want to preserve/regrow my hair and after months of browsing on hair loss forum, I concluded that only Finasteride is the only thing that truly works; therefore, I was wondering if I started Finpecia at 0.5 mg, would the sides likely come back? It would be nice to have some feedback for finasteride users who have dropped to 0.5mg (or less) due to sides.

Finally, is there hope that 0.5mg of finasteride can cause regrowth?

Thank You

0.5 is most likely to cause the same sides. People affected by sides even get them at 0.25 mg every three days...

Everyone is different. Yes, the sides are dose related. The higher the dose the more side effects. The lower the dose the less side effects. You have to find a dose that for you produces the most optimum growth with the least amount of side effects.

Considering Finasteride has a near flat-dose response rate, that's going to be impossible. 0.25mg, 1mg and 5mg of finasteride inhibit nearly same amount of DHT across the board.

Until you get to microscopic dosing (0.01mg - 0.04mg), don't expect any changes in reducing side effects, which will also mean reduced efficacy for hair growth since less DHT would be inhibited.

I disagree with you entirely.

The amount of sides I had at 0.25mg, 0.5 mg, and 1 mg were quite different. It might have a flat dose response in terms of DHT, but there might be some other mechanism of action at work here that actually causes sides, and not DHT itself.

The reason I know this is because I have recently started Dutasteride, and have experienced virtually no sides for the past two and a half weeks, while Finasteride gave me sides as soon as I started it--every single time.

You're free to disagree, however it doesn't change the scientific fact of how Finasteride operates in terms of DHT surpression, as shown in the FDA clinical trials per previous link.

Speaking from personal experience as well, I also tried reducing my dosage from 1.25mg to 0.625mg and even less, and it made no difference in my side effects while I was on it.

Mew is right in terms of DHT inhibition (and I NEVER agree with Mew) but GrayMan, I think you are correct in that there is some other type of mechanism at play here.

Nobody really knows why finasteride causes side effects. If it were as simple as: removing DHT = side effects, then almost every guy that takes Dutasteride would have full blown sexual problems. Clinical trials show almost identical side effects between dutasteride and finasteride. Studies have also concluded that DHT is not responsible for sexual function after puberty; Testosterone takes that role. I'm not sure why people keep perpetuating this: "DHT is what makes you a man" crap. Sure, it MADE you a man when you were a fetus and during puberty, but it doesn't KEEP you as a sexually potent man throughout adulthood.

I would agree that there is likely some other sort of unknown or overlooked mechanism that causes side effects in some men - and (stated to save arguing) persistently in others. This could possibly be affected by dosages. Maybe some people do better with a lower dose, maybe some have problems on any dose.
