dutasteride and SKIN

I was using Dutasteride for a bit last spring. I took .5 mg generic for about 3-4 months. Initially I noticed solid thickening all over and improved hair quality. The reason for my post, however, is to inquire about the effects on my skin. Almost immediately after starting treatment, I noticed that my skin started to clear up. I didnt have major acne problems before. The improvement I saw in my skin was that it looked and felt smoother and fresher. I felt as though I never needed to wash it! After a while, though, things returned to normal and sometimes seemed to get worse. I quit taking the meds because I was scared away after reading some negative posts about it. Fast forward to the present. Ive noticed my hair getting shittier. I still have a couple of pills left and have starting taking them again. sure enough my skin has cleared up like before. I wanna know why after three months or so of use things will go back to normal? I feel like the dimnishing quality of my skin coincided with my hair returning to normal after an intial thickening up phase. Can somebody knowledgable shed some light on this?

so you quit taking the dutasteride for a while? or you would skip dosages a lot during this period because you were scared of sides?

If so, I would think if you resumed the normal dosage consistantly this would help get your hair back into decent shape especially since you know you are a good responder to dutasteride to begin with.

Your skin being drier and fresher could lead to premature wrinkles. Skin oil or whatever that is might be good for your skin. DHT is found in high concentrations in the skin among other things. Just keep in mind that removing DHT could look good short term but 10 years from now you might see problems. Im not trying to alarm people or bad mouth dutasteride im just saying proceed with caution dutasteride has not been proven as safe as finasteride.

Not at all correct.

Premature wrinkles are caused by over-exposure to UVA, not lack of skin moisture. That's why normal moisturisers don't do jack as anti-ageing agents. Use a good, photostable, UVA-protective sunscreen daily.

They are usually nowhere near as good as proper sunscreens. SPF moisturizers tend not to be very substantive (substantivity refers to the ability of the sunscreen to adhere to the skin and retain its original SPF under conditions of use), so it is best to look for an SPF product labeled water-resistant or very-resistant - as well as photostable and UVA protective. Most US products aren't very UVA protective, apart from LRP Anthelios SX and Neutrogena Dry Touch with Helioplex. Much more choice in Europe, Asia and other parts of the Americas.

the anthelios sx moisturizer is actually what i'm using right now in the warmer and sunny weather. so you're saying that you don't think ineed to add another sunscreen on top of it as long as i'm applying that regularly while out in the sun?

the downside is that the stuff is really expensive. i might just switch to the neutrogena one you listed. i pay like 30 bucks for the the anthelios.

Yeah I think the LRP Anthelios - a very good product - is marketed as a "moisturising sunscreen" or something. The distinction can be just semantic, but most of the SPF moiturisers we have on the shelves here in the UK are pretty crap.

Neutrogena is apparently very good, but some folks say it's quite drying and doesn't leave a good finish. I've never tried it - it's not sold over here - so I can't vouch for the accuracy of those comments!

leaving a good finish? what do you mean?

the neutrogena one you listed is just a sunscreen from what i can tell and not a moisturizing sunscreen.

Yes that's what I mean, the texture and appearance of the skin following application, i.e. is it shiny or matt, whitened or otherwise discoloured?

Here in Europe, La Roche Posay Dermo-Peds spf40/ppd 18 spray. You can't buy it in the US, but can import from Spanish site http://www.tubotica.com or French site http://www.vitago.com, amongst other places.
