Early Shedding (week 2-3) And Oily Scalp On finasteride

Hi guys!

I've decided to start a new thread on this specific topic as I couldn't find enough info (all of the posts I have found were really old) about others experience on early shedding and oily scalp on finasteride. So here is my story:

First time I started using finasteride was in December 2015. I had no heavy sides at first, just some more shedding a couple of weeks after I've started taking the drug. I noticed that I was not only losing head hairs but also body hairs which was weird. I continued taking finasteride for 3-4 months before dropping it for decreased libido and I haven't experienced any progress. After pausing for a while I have started using minoxidil and still using it (4-5 months already). Gradually my hair became thicker and the shedding went away (1-2 hairs in the shower, which I believe is ok).

I had some second thoughts about finasteride - whether my hair got better because of it or the decreased libido was caused by another drug I was taking at the moment. So I have decided to give finasteride another chance and added it again to my regimen for three weeks this July and experienced massive shedding and thinning on the second-third week. I have experiences testicular and nipple pain in first ten days or so. Now I have stopped finasteride and shedding seemed to slow down. But it is still far more than it used to be when I was on minoxidil only.

What I first thought has happened that I was having old weak hairs falling out that would later regrow and be stronger. Then I have noticed that my scalp is super oily and went searching these symptoms. Seems that this combination (early shedding and oily scalp) indicates that finasteride won't be working for me and make more damage than good. It is the case when your body has allergic reaction to the drug and produces far more testosterone than it used to.

Now after a couple of weeks without finasteride my scalp skin is back to normal. Yet still some shedding on head hair and even on body hair - if i try to pull out my chest hair or eyebrows, one or two hairs will fall out easily. Also my hair is a lot thinner than it was a month ago. No decreased libido though, on the contrary I think its stronger now than before.

Any ideas about my case? Am I wrong with my assumptions? How can I check if I am a good responder to finasteride? I know other guys on the forum have same issues and I hope we can find answers to those questions together.

Thanks!

What norwood scale are you at? How do you know your scalp is oily? Is your hair oily? Do you also get pimples on your scalp?

I think I am 2 with a small but visible gap on the vertex. I've just touched the scalp (forehead part) and saw some oil on my fingers. I dont think that my hair is oily but it surely looks worse with my scalp skin like that. No pimples.

Three weeks without finasteride - less and less shedding, almost back to my usual couple of hairs in the shower. Still wondering what have caused the shedding and was it the right decision to stop finasteride. Is there a legit way to know if you are a good responder to finasteride? I mean like blood tests and all?
