I’m learning new things all the time, and the more I read, the more I find that the role of estrogen in the inhibition or promotion of hair growth is vastly different in both sexes. I had previously speculated at the lack of aromatase causing recession of the male frontal hairline, may be caused my the lack of estrogen men have relative to women. I wondered then, if topical treatments containing estrogenic properties may infact help to regrow the male hairline.
I have since then, read studies detailing the various effects of different kinds of estrogen (17-alpha estradiol and 17-beta estradiol) on hairgrowth in both sexes. The presence of 17-beta INHIBITED hair growth in both sexes created a premature catagen and elongated telogen phase (17-beta was applied to the skin of both male and female mice and showed to
cause retardation of hair regrowth compared to control group of mice), but when 17-beta receptor antagonist ICI 182 780 was applied, hair regrew and returned to a normal hair growth cycle. However when 17-alpha estradiol was applied, it was shown to promote hairgrowth in females, whilst inhibiting hairgrowth in males, providing an insight into the significantly different effects estrogen has upon hairgrowth in our two genders.
Here is a summary of the study

I will add also, that it is a common issue amongst women who take the pill, to experience hairloss due to an altered, slowed rate of hair regrowth caused by the synthetic estrogens in these pills, which cause hair to shed out sooner, but remain in catagen longer. It’s a catch-22, because we also know that estrogen can promote hairgrowth, and cause hair to stay in its Anagen phase for longer also IN WOMEN.
Nevertheless, we continue on our quest to further elucidate the roles of estrogen in hairgrowth. It would appear that we actually know f*** all as estrogen is an insidious c**t. Sorry guys.
