Fear of the Barber

It was around 2 1/2 years ago that I stopped going to the barber. Reason being is that my hair had gotten so thin there was no real way for them to cut it in a normal style (not the way I wanted it anyway). Another reason was also the embarressment factor of only being 21 at the time and loosing my hair.

Thinking back when I had hair they never really cut it the way I wanted it anyway. The barbers at the place I went to were hardly proffessional stylists.

Anyway my question to you guys is how many of you are forced to cut your own hair like myself. I buzz the back and sides to a 4 and then cut the top with scissors but keep it much longer so I can comb it forward into a ceasar style. Ill be honest, a lot of the time it really doesnt look good at all, but I can not face the embarressment of getting it done properly.

Do you guys have any tips for getting a good cut or style yourself. I heard about a vaccum cutter that a lot of guys with hair pieces use which you can by online, is it any good. Is there anyway to cut your hair to create more density like special scissors or anything like that.

Anything that prevents you from going to a barber is some serious anxiety.

Take a chill pill, man.

I can relate to you, and I know how hard it is.

I've only been to the barber twice in last 6 months, but know what it's like.

You have to face the music.

Try to understand that it's no so easy, but it's the best way of moving on with yourself... at least, for the time being. :)

I don't like barbers. They never cut my hair the way I want it, and they pull my hair a lot and that is something I don't like.

I cut it myself and did so for the last 8 years. Even before I started losing my hair I stopped going to barbers.

i had the same barber all throughout high school up until my senior year of college. I would go home from college every 2 weeks, one week for a shapeup to shave the sides, and 2 weeks later for a cut. i loved my haircutter. she was awesome, i no longer had to say what i wanted..she just knew. Then my senior year i went through a terrible bout of Telogen Effluvium. ill never forget going to her when my scalp was all inflamed and my hair was long and greasy and she brushed it and like clumps of hair fell out onto the brush. i was on the verge of tears. I was so embarrased i stopped using her. now its been so long, i dont have the guts to go back to her ever again.

its sad how much my life changed...i long for the old days when it all made sense or at least i could count on getting my haircut exactly the best way for my head shape and always making sure it was trimmed to my satisfaction. that was one thing i always counted on and never thought would change. :(

Yeah, I've been doing my own for years now. Before my hair transplant's I just buzzed it grade 1 anyway it took about 30secs so why go to a barber and pay about £4 for the same. They must see lots of balding/receeding people everyday but the majority of their regulars are probably people who have great hair and take pride in it. I must admit I'd be a bit self concious especialy if it was a hot woman cutting it (especially because I'm young). As soon as you start losing it any options as far as styling etc go straight down the drain. It really bugs me because where I work many of the guys have extravagant styles like Beckham that they change every few weeks (the woman love this and are always asessing them and chatting to them about it). I guess the way we feel about going to the hairdressers is the same way a seriously out of shape person would feel going to the gym.

stop going to barbers. go to a hairdresser/hairstylist and get a proper hair cut. i look forward to getting my hair cut because afterward it basically looks like im not balding at all. that is the benefit of paying a little more and going to someone who really knows what they are doing.

Wow, you guys need to take Aplunk's advice and head to the barber. Contrary to what you might think, they aren't sitting around spending time thinking about your hair or lack thereof. They see baldies on a daily basis. Besides, you ain't that important to them.

Do you also practice self-dentistry?

How about performing at-home colonoscopies?

I used to be like this.. more so because of my social anxiety disorder.. i used to actually get drunk before getting my haircut.. now i just go in and face it. You have to realize, they see guys with thinning hair, constantly! it's nothing new to them...

My own objection to barber's and hairstylists is that they do not realize how WRONG it is to rub/scrub what hair you have left on your head to get rid of the remaining little bits of hair after they cut it... I literally could kill them when they do that.. I don't even rub my head hard when i get out of the shower..

I haven't had a haircut in over 10 years now. I had bad hair transplants, which were mostly correct, as I've posted this before, but I'm horribly scarred in the back, and I'm so afraid they'll know. I mean, they'd have to try not to see it, plus I would have to tell them to not cut too short in certain areas otherwise you can see the open graft scars or the line scar. I'm just too embarrassed and ashamed, so I get the conair cutting combs (I hope they make them for the rest of my life) an dcut my hair myself.. Maybe if I found someone who specialized on hair transplant people I would go see one, but I'd probably been to ashamed to do that too :(

If your going to do your own cutting get a decent set of electric clippers. Thankfully with new improved methods (especially in the last couple of years) such as tri-closure, strip scars are almost invisible. Hassan & Wong have a video on their site of a former patient shaved down to grade one and the scar could'nt be seen. At a recent Feller showcase one former patients tri closure scar couldnt be found under a grade 3 haircut.

I know what you mean, I started to be become concious of cute girls in salons cutting my hair as my hairloss got worse, I found myself using barbers much more often again, more recently I have been shaving my hair myself.

i have big issues with going to the barber/hairstylist.

It mostly stems from the fact that I'm only 20. It's just to embarassing to say the words balding or hair line at my age. I know for a fact that they will understand and I could even see the expression on their faces that they wanted to address the issue back when I still went.

I just bought some clippers and I buzz my hair now. I'm none the happier with the results compared to the stylists.

The barber I go to half the time makes you face the opposite direction to the mirror! So you never see balding or thinning areas of your scalp during the haircut --- and when the hair is short at the end and he turns the chair around, my scalp doesn't show through.

But he is farther from where I live and more expensive than the local Great Clips so I vary between the two.

I stopped going because the last 2 times were horrible. Last time i went to a stylist, who came out with 'you're quite receeding aren't you', and I lookedaround and it was either women or guys with wicked hair in there, and then just me 'quite receeding'. It was quite expensive and didn't even look any good. The time before that I went to a barbers, and tried to have them cut my hair like I had it as I was younger (say a year and a half before), and they tried but it just didn't work anymore, and they ended up having to cut my fringe off to about 1/2 inch, which resulted in me looking like I'd shaved my head, and my mum going 'OMG,WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR FRINGE!'.

So, I've cut my own hair since febuary.
