heres my story. ive never really had extremely thick hair or anything but about 6 months ago i grew it out long and had it corn rowed. this is turn ripped a large amount of hair out and the hair that grew back was considerably thinner leading me to believe that dht is starting to affect my follicles. im 20 years old and i want to stop the thinning while i can and want to make sure im taking the right steps. i havent started yet but ive ordered a year supply of finasteride at 1mg a day, went out and purchased some saw palmetto extract 85%-95% with 5% sterols, and i am going to purchase 5% minoxidil from costco in the next few days. i will most likely also buy some nizoral %1 ketoconazole shampoo to use every couple days. i am looking to start this regimin within the next month. these seem to be the most popular and successful combinations. is this appropriate for my age/situation? is there anything to know that can help me beforehand? any tips or feedback would be appreciated. thanks.

You seem to have researched well but just in case, here's 2 tips:

1. patience - it's a long road with a lot of hills and valleys
2. http://www.hairlosstalk.com/faq/ - learn all this and you will be better positioned to survive the demons in the valleys.

Good luck.

Your plan sounds good, however, due to your age, i would perhaps suggest stsrting your regimen (minoxidil 5%, saw palmetto & nizoral) without the finasteride for 6 months to see how you respond to those treatments...then add the fina later...

It's only a suggestion...

ps. nizoral 2% is preferred.

is it alright to rub the minoxidil onto your scalp with your hands because im applying it to the whole top of the scalp. if not, are there other effective ways to go about it as to not miss spots? thanks.

Rubbing it in lightly is fine.

I disagree with my buddy Lizzad. I say try the finasteride as it is probably the most effective way to curtail hairloss. Give it a run for at least 12 months. If you notice negative side effects, then and only then remove it from your regime.

do you find 1 ml enough for the complete top of the head? im trying to make sure im applying the right amount since this is my first time. i have my head buzzed with a 3 so im assuming the length of my hair should really be a problem. its just that my head doesnt seem that wet after 1 ml on the complete top of my head. thanks a lot guys for helping me out with this.

1 ml is enough for head with a #3 cut. Just make sure you spread well with the dropper.

Don't forget to tip your head back or it will run into an eye, causing you to jump back and step on the dog's tail, which in turn will cause him to knock over a lamp and set the house on fire, causing a lot of grief between you and your neighbors.

So, level head = happy neighbors. Good luck.

So does anyone use more than 1 mL to cover the entire top of scalp? It seems as if that's hardly enough to cover the large area I need covered, especially when the 1 mL dose is meant just for the vertex area.

alright, another question for the experts. im fine with using minoxidil and plan on starting finasteride once it arrives in the mail. i just starting about 5 days ago and notice no unusual dryness. maybe the hair feels a little more brittle after its been in but thats it. does this mean im not going to have to worry about nizoral shampoos and such? because arent those used to stop itchiness and/or flakiness? thanks guys.

oh by the way, ive been on saw palmetto for a month now and cant believe how much my libido has gone up. i have tons of vellus hairs in the thinning areas (im a diffuse thinner) but especially in the temple region. this could be the saw palmetto but could also be the original hairs that have gotten thinner, i didnt notice the vellus hairs until i read about them here and looked for them. is the general consensus that minoxidil alone with help save these? if not, once i add finasteride (maybe a couple of weeks, depends on shipping) , will the combo of finasteride and min restore these?

I would suggest using the 1% nizoral twice a week. It works on inflammation, even minimal inflammation that you may not notice. Some folks claim it is also an anti-androgen, but that seems unclear.

Re restoration of hairs, it is very possible but you will need to see. No guarantees, only percentages. The bottom line is using the big three gives you the best odds for some substantial regrowth.

Good luck
