can you cut 1 mg tabs into like .25 tabs to reduce the possibility of side effects while maintaining the effectiveness of propecia? have any studies been done to show how much is needed?

Not nearly as effective, but effective nonetheless. Google it. Then look at the graphs.

Somewhere in the forum there is a clinical test with 1mg and .5mg finasteride. I can't remember where, but perhaps someone else will.

Basically it works, just not as quick/well.

Yes, you are correct: 0.25 mg doses are nearly as effective as 1 mg doses. However, side-effects are nearly the same, too. Sorry, but you can't have your cake and eat it, too!

I have been on 0.25mg for around 5 months and haven't seen any improvement as yet. I still have loads of hairs fall out everyday. The lower dose did stop the sides though. I tried 0.5mg at first which resulted in an almost constant ache in my balls and a serious lack of libido. I perservered for around a week but just couldn't carry on. I know these sides might have gone after a couple of months but I just didn't want to put myself through it any longer. I stopped for a couple of weeks then started again with 0.25mg (1/4 Propecia) and haven't had any major sides at all. I am still getting very minor sides though such as no boners when I wake up in the morning and maybe a very slight loss of libido compared with before I started taking it.

I think it's a fairly arbitrary choice.

I think Bryan's right. We all have different hormone levels and different types of hair loss and there are people who have had success on lower doses. I remember someone posting a while back who had good success taking 1.25mg every other day. I think Merck arrived at 1mg as this seemed best for the majority of people in their trials. I'm hoping that as I had sides on 0.5mg that I won't need as much for it to work with me.

Agreed. If less made sense (at this time), the manufacturer would recommend less and sell it to you at the same price you're paying now. I know I would if I was in their position!

I wonder if body weight has any impact on the use of finasteride, ie. a 180lb man vs. 350lb man.
