finasteride and less body hair?

I wanted to open a new topic, because from time to time you see people mention that after they used propecia/proscar/etc.. they noticed that their body hair was reduced.

If so how long does it take before you notice this effect? And is it noticeable, or just slightly?

Cause I'm 23 now, still got most of my hair (thinning a bit though), and debating whether or not to take those propecia pills I have lying around here. If it in fact reduces bodyhair, it would be a big bonus for me though ( I hate body hair, I don't have hair on my shoulders yet, but give it a couple of years and I bet it will pop up there too :) ), and probably push me over the edge.

I understand that most people here use Propecia with minoxidil though (which I read increases bodyhair), so I guess most people won't notice the difference. But just curious if sole propecia users noticed any difference.

It MIGHT happen, but its not a scientifically-verified side effect - only anecdotal. That being said, it shouldn't enter into your analysis of whether or not to take finasteride - because it's by no means guaranteed to occur.

Neither is it guaranteed that I will keep my hair right? :) Ah well I'll just try it out and see what happens. And If I do get hair on my back, I guess getting it lasered isn't that expensive.

It is far more guaranteed that you will keep your hair than that you will lose body hair. If finasteride reduced body hair with the success it maintained scalp hair, Merck would undoubtedly tout that fact.

I have definitely noticed that 1mg Finasteride has reduced my body hair. Mainly on my legs, arms, and less so on my stomach and back. Didn't seem to affect my facial hair or chest hair for some reason. Again thou all of these reports are anecdotal, and it is kind of surprising that it isn't listed as a side effect.

Well I've been taking it for a week now, and haven't noticed any effects yet (no hair loss, barely lose any hair under the shower anyways). Maybe a small decrease in libido, not sure really, but not enough from having sex or anything :).

paximperia, when did you noticed that finasteride reduced your body hair? I guess it's sooner then seeing the effects from finasteride on the hair on your head (I want to keep the hair I have now, so no use making before and after pics), since it just needs to fall off right?

Let's just hope I can shed some of that hair, I'm just not a big fan of body hair :).

Well the body hair thing is just getting to be noticeable now, and it's been 5 months. My hair stopped falling out about a month ago.

I think once body hair and facial hair develope reducing dht shouldnt stop or change that. Now if you took propecia before you developed body or facial hair then reducing dht should in theory stop or slow you from getting body and facial hair.

Ah well we'll see.

On it for 2 weeks now I believe, and what I've noticed:
- harder to get up out of bed? But that could be because of 2 busy weeks.
- maybe a bit less hair on my pillow (but I barely shed any hair to begin with)
- libido might have gone down a bit, not anything to worry about though

All these may or not be because of propecia, but are so minor that I'm not too worried about it. If I would get side effects, they should have shown up by now right?

And about the body hair, I've seen several people who noticed a THINNING of body hair, so while it should stop body hair that is yet to come, it also seems to have a chance of reducing current bodyhair.

Well I haven't got any chest hair yet, so I guess I will never get to see any of those :(. Will post here again if I noticed anything out of the ordinary.

Oh and atm I'm using propecia, but I will switch to generic proscar when I run out of these (got a prescription for propecia but it costs me $80 each month, and my doctor wouldn't prescribe me proscar since he said I barely had any hair loss...)

Thanks for the input.

my theory on dht blockers like finasteride and dutasteride is if you were to start either right after puberty b4 hair on back and chest and face started you would never have hair there. but once you have hair there i dont think finasteride or dutasteride reduces it so much maybe a tad dutasteride a lil more but if your 20 or so and dont have a full chest of hair yet i think you never will if you take finasteride the rest of your life. my son as soon as he turns 18 my gift instead of a car will be a fresh pack of propecia, catching the hairs b4 they ever even miniturize will ensure the more hair you keep later in life. in theory if you caught your hair loss real early say at 18 b4 even a receding hairline, i think you would never develop one.

actually i might be a little wrong. If your body is very sensitive to dht then with the small amount of dht left you might still get a little body hair even using propecia before puberty. It also does depend on your bodies sensitivity to the remaining dht.
