Finasteride side eIffects different with generic versus name brand?

Hey all,

Back in March I made the plunge and asked my dermatologist for a prescription for finasteride to combat hair male pattern hair loss. I got generic proscar and cut the tablet into fourths and took 1.25mg daily for about 8 days. Beginning from day one (about 2 hours after taking the medication) I got testicular pains, and intense breast pains (possible gyno development) and I gained a lot of weight. After 8 days, it was too much pain/uncomfort and I discontinued use- but I developed very real Post Finasteride Syndrome which sent me to the emergency room twice due to brainfog, insomnia, lack of libido, and disinterest/lack of emotion. I began feeling these side effects of PFS before I even learned what PFS was. It knocked me out of my life and I missed a lot of work.

Anyway, roughly a month and a half after that nightmare, I recovered 100% taking it day by day and I'm now back to normal. Thing is, my hairloss has accelerated so fast since then. I'm 23 years old- never had short hair in my life, always had shoulder length long hair. I would say prior this I was a norwood 2 and now I'm a norwood 2.5 with signs of vertex loss. Both of my temples are receded pretty badly now and now the middle part of my hairline which hasn't receded is getting incredibly thin with the roots turning grey/white and I fear it'll turn into the dreaded "island." Where it's just a thin tuft of hair. My crown is getting pretty thin to and I'm always getting "the itch."

The thing is, the remainder of my hair is so thick and I have nape hair and I've always been an incredibly hairy person. I don't know if I can rock the shiny shaved head look, since I've always had long hair and it's ingrained in who I am, so I'm looking for other options. I've tried Rogain in the past and it did nothing for me aside from making my long hair a nightmare to style due to being greasy and dirty looking.

So, I'm wondering...since I got generic Proscar and took that previously and got horrible side effects, what would happen if I got name brand Propecia. Anyone out there have sides from generic Proscar and then switch to Propecia and not get sides? Or vise versa? I'm giving serious thought to trying again with name brand 1mg Propecia, but maybe I should count my blessings that I was able to recover from severe PFS and all of the side effects and just accept hairloss and end up looking like Bonnie Prince Billy.

I'd love some opinions. Thanks much!

Dude there's no way finasteride gave you all those sides after a week of use...

I believe you bra, have you consider doing the .5mg EOD or .25mg? I'm not on the finasteride but I'm considering it (25 with diffuse thinning). Real nervous about the potential side effects. Are you currently living an active lifestyle? Ie. hitting the gym, running or anything like that?

I'm sorry you don't believe me man. Testicular pains/gyno pains were almost immediate. Several hours after my first dose. The PFS side effects surfaced about a week after I discontinued use and lasted almost 3-4 weeks. It was hell.

I hate how people here immediately discredit someone as being "paranoid about side effects" or being a "fear monger" when stuff like this happens. Everyone's body is different and everyone's tolerance to being altered chemically by synthetic drugs is 100% unique.

Yeah, I live a fairly active lifestyle. I'm no couch potato, but at the same time I'm not a health/fitness nut either. Nothing wrong with being the latter, but personally I don't go to the gym, but I run when I have the time and I do a lot of physical activity at work and I'm always on my feet and I try and eat healthy when I can.

I'm really trying the weigh the risk/reward factors here. The last couple of days when I was still taking finasteride, I had tried various methods to mitigate side effects, like taking 1.25 mg at night before I go to sleep instead of in the morning, so my nuts would ache while I was asleep rather than during the day at work. I also tried splitting the pill into eights (.625 mg) daily and that still gave me side effects at the same intensity.

Lately, I have been taking saw palmetto everyday with my daily vitamins. At this point if I can just stop or significantly slow it down I think I'll be happy. I don't know how willing I am to try finasteride again. Maybe I'll give minoxidil another go? I have no idea. I'm trying very hard to not let this dictate my life, but at the same time I'm here on this forum so, I suppose that says a lot! Haha! Keep me updated with what you decide to try and how it goes. Hopefully, whatever you end up doing works for you!

How are the side effects from your finasteride dosing holding up my man? If I am to take the plunge I'm thinking of doing the .25 mg EOD or every third day maybe you could try that if you're going to take it again? At the same time I'm going to be eating a butt load of broccoli and other natural anti-estrogens to offset the side effects (I think a lot of the ill side effects come from an increase in estrogen not just a decrease in DHT). I think this could definitely offset the negative effects of finasteride. Were you taking Saw Palmetto while on finasteride? I imagine that'd be overkill if you were. They say finasteride decreases DHT by 70%, its to bad we couldn't take something that only cut it down by desired levels such as 40 or 50%.
