studies show that high doses of vitamin A and l-cysteine to be toxic. Probably not realistic to replicate this study for your hair loss situation.

Yeah I saw that once I researched high doses of vit A . But still wondering about the gelatin alone. I read on a blog where a lady who was Mexican said her husband who had a bald top started eating a lot of jello because her culture loves and eats it a lot. Her husband started eating a package a day and his hair started regrowing. This is gelatin alone not with the other vit a and stuff.

It says "Low dosage retinol" .....

rwhairlosstalk..the product I take above also contains MSM and Vit C. I'd like to think it's helping my hair..but who knows with the other things I take/use.

you've got to be kidding me....where the hell did this come from??? This isn't your typical lame claims...real scientists, real data, etc, etc...what a great find!! As a diffuse thinner this is something I'll have to look into seriously...

Bill Cosby might be on to something here :)

Google the affect gelatin might have on helping minimize the effects of food allergies...hmmmmm, allergies??

Some parts of it:

It must be mentioned that a favorable effect on the growth of hair has been reported also by Morganti et al. 1982 [16-17, 18] effect of gelatin-cysteine diet supplement on growth of human hair. The study was double blind, lasted three month, and involved 40 volunteers aged between 20-40 years. The diet of the volunteers was two gram gelatin and 0.8 gram cysteine every day or placebo (starch tablets). The scalp of each participant was carefully examined and the number of follicular sites as well as the number of individual hairs emerging from each site was determined.

The area 1cm X 1cm chosen for the count was between the rear and front vertex according to Moretti subdivision. For the diameter assay, the hair about 200 mg was sampled from around the count areas with the fibers cut off as close to scalp as possible. The sulfur content of hair was determined by oxygen flask method and its thiol content was measured.

The results of this study suggested that the dietary supplementation of gelatin and cysteine combination promoted more intense hair growth and leads to substantial increase in the diameter of the fibers. The corresponding sulfur content of hair implies that it is the high sulfur fraction of hair that is affected the most.

Something you'd kinda want for those new hairs coming up due to dermarolling or ?...no?

In 1986, Padova et al. published an article on gelatin-cysteine in seborrheic alopecia in which, 60 Subjects (40 females, and 20 males) affected by Seborrhea alopecia took part. Each volunteer took four capsules a day for 3 month [19]. Every capsule contained 500 mg gelatin and 200 mg l-cysteine (In total 2-gram gelatin and 800 mg cysteine daily). The results were significant reduction in seborrhea in 30% of the subjects and significant reduction in sebum level.

In 1989, Hertel H, et al. [20] published a pilot study the efficacy of a new combination therapy for hair loss of the diffuse type was tested in 36 patients, followed by a double blind study with 47 patients. The daily dosage was 18000 1E retinol (type of vitamin A supplement) and 70 mg L-cysteine and 7000 mg gelatin.

The clinical efficacy was evaluated by standard methods such as preparation of trichograms and measurement of the hair density before and after treatment. The pilot study demonstrated a significant improvement with reduction of the telogen rate by 8.3%, an increase of the anagen rate by 11% and increase of the hair density by 6.9%. In the double blind study with the 47 patients, the trichogram showed a significant decrease of telogen rate by 13.5% compared with pathological baseline values. There was no change in the placebo group. The lowered anagen rate of 47.2% was improved by 8%, whereas the mean value in the placebo group decreased from 47.7% to 39.9%.

In addition, the percentage of dysplastic anagen hairs improved by 7.4%, as against further impairment with an increase of 26% in the placebo group. During oral therapy, no systemic side effects were detected. Hertel et al. concluded that long-term oral therapy with high doses of L-cysteine and gelatin in combination with vitamin A might have beneficial effects on diffuse hair loss.

In yet another article by Morganti et al. [21] he reexamined the influence of gelatin with the addition of cysteine and serenoa repens on
hair growth (serenoa repens is commonly known as saw palmetto and Sabal serrulatum, it is a small palm tree, normally reaching a height of around 2–4 m). The study was conducted for a long period application of 50 weeks of a new cosmetic lotion, on 48 volunteers (24 women and 24 men) aged between 21 and 38 years, affected by androgenetic alopecia (type 3 and 4 according to Hamilton).

Twelve subjects also took a dietary supplement (four pills per day) based on gelatin and cysteine. The solution and the dietary supplement (placebo and active) were assigned in a randomized double blind manner. Hair mass and the mean hair number were controlled according to Price et al. exclusion criteria included use of topical or oral drug or diet supplement within the previous six months.

The obtained results showed an increase of hair mass from 20 to 30% (p<0.005) together with a contemporary increase of hair number (from 17 to 27%) (p<0.005) compared to the placebo for subject using the lotion only. With the diet supplement a further increase of 50% (p<0.005) in hair growth and significant decrease of blood ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) were obtained. In conclusion, a review of the all the up to date in the medical literature of studies regarding the effect of gelatin on female pattern hair loss in clinical controlled environment was shown. It is obvious that all the studies herein, report on a positive result in the effect of gelatin in the growth of hair.

That last one was mentioned here http://www.hairlosstalk.com/interact/showthread.php/66574-taking-another-look-at-saw-palmetto but I guess the "saw palmetto" made everyone move on.

Again..the PDF is better...

This seems almost too stupid to not try...I went to Planet Organic and bought these sheets of gelatin that come in a package of 6 with each giving 1.7g...I guess you just soak it in water and it "melts to gel" ...at 3.4g/day, it's $5/week...

http://www.gobiofood.com/organic-gelatin-6sheets-p-1780.html?osCsid=54070f32bbb8619d37263e3e37180bd1

...So you put gel in your hair...I guess it makes sense to put gel in what makes you hair follicles?? Another instance where there are health benefits beyond "hair help" so what the hell....Supposedly, gelatin has worked miracles for some people with joint pain, for example...:book:

I have N-acetyl l-cisteine left over from the glutathione regime, so let's give it a shot

I ordered the Bernard Jensen powder for now. If the Swanson combo goes on sale or even BOGO..I'll switch to those pills. I've seen thickening of my hair with that Europharma combo I take..so I doubt I'll see much difference by adding this. But for those new hairs that need all the help they can get..why not :punk:

And speaking of gel in your hair..there are blogs out there discussing adding gelatin to shampoo or even gel- supposed to thicken up hair quite well.

BTW..the powder seems to be a much better deal. A tablespoon is 12g(the protein part)...26 servings for a bit more than $14. The NOW brand, especially the 4lb container..is much cheaper yet even though it's only 9g per tbsp.

Get a load of this -- I was talking to my sister about gelatin and how I'm taking these wafers. Somehow, she remembered our Grandmother taking these gelatin packets dissolved in water and drinking it back all the time...we must have been 6 or 7 years old...how she remembered this, I dunno, but she does...this was back in the late 70's..

go figure...

I think that Knox product was advertised years ago for nail health or something.

You mentioned it being another case of being for overall health as well as for hair..that's why I also take those mushroom extracts(L-Ergothioneine).

I'm gonna order the gelatin powder from iherb as it's more convenient. Also adding Now food L-Cysteine. May try derma roller after a while. I keep seeing different things that would compliment it but still hard to decide which topical is best and safest.

Started the powder yesterday. As with a lot of powder products I take..I just spooned it in my mouth and swallowed it down right away with a big glass of water.

I had some gelatin in the cupboard that I was taking a year ago for a knee injury. I do think it helped my knee recover faster and I also think it is great for overall health. Started taking it again a week ago and will continue. I also added some gelatin to my shampoo and have used it a handful of times. It gives my hair some additional thickness (although subtle) and it feels better. It's not much different than using a volumizing shampoo.

I use Great Lakes gelatin. They also have a more refined version called collagen hydrolysate that dissolves easily in room temperature water.

Jacob, I am impressed with your method of taking gelatin. I don't think I would be able to stomach a dry spoonful. Impressive.

It's actually fairly neutral tasting. Swanson has that Verisol bioactive collagen peptide product that's apple flavored :punk: ..but until they have a BOGO sale....
Good info page on that stuff: http://www.swansonvitamins.com/health-library/products/verisol-collagen-peptides-beautiful-skin.html

@Jacob sorry I'm just seeing your post. Did you try this? I'm thinking on doing this, what the study says, vitamin a, l-cysteine, and gelatin once a day then building up to twice a day. I shouldn't hurt. Of course I wont be using them at toxic levels. Have you seen any results? Has anyone?

Well what's funny is I forgot I'd actually been taking it for quite awhile with the product I linked to in the beginning of this thread. The link is dead so here's the new one: http://www.natureshealingremedies.com/product/1005 The price has gone up or it's no longer on sale...will go back to it if the price comes down.

So yeah..I've been taking it for some time- at the moment it's the plain gelatin. The Vit A and l-cysteine is in the hair combo I take. Existing hair is thicker, but due to the hair combo as well I'm sure. I've been taking that for over half a year as well.

I've been consuming 1 tablespoon of gelatin or collagen hydrolysate per day on a regular basis since mid August. I miss days here and there and don't always take it with me when I travel. I have not seen an overly dramatic result, but I do think my hair is thicker. It is less see through when I comb it after a shower, and I have been shedding much less. The reduced shedding could simply be a cycle or due to some other factor. I did not keep any photographic evidence and am not trying to persuade anyone. Overall I think it has helped and I will continue using it. The only other thing I do is nizoral every other day which I have been doing for a couple years, and the occasional jojoba oil scalp massage. I was applying cet to my hairline but just started forgetting to do it. I never noticed any improvement from the cet.

I took gelatin capsules for a few months and never saw any benefits. Hair or nails.
