"Small amounts of dutasteride have been recovered from the semen in subjects receiving Avodart 0.5mg day. Based on studies in animals, it is unlikely that a male foetus will be adversely affected if his mother is exposed to the semen of a patient being treated with Avodart (the risk of which is greatest during the first 16 weeks of pregnancy)".

"The effects of dutasteride 0.5mg/day on semen characteristics were evaluated in healthy volunteers aged 18 to 52 (n=27 dutasteride, n=23 placebo) throughout 52 weeks of treatment and 24 weeks of post-treatment follow-up. At 52 weeks, the mean percent reduction from baseline in total sperm count, semen volume and sperm motility were 23%, 26% and 18%, respectively, in the dutasteride group when adjusted for changes from baseline in the placebo group. Sperm concentration and sperm morphology were unaffected. After 24 weeks of follow-up, the mean percent change in total sperm count in the dutasteride group remained 23% lower than baseline. While mean values for all parameters at all time points remained within the normal ranges and did not meet the predefined criteria for a clinically significant change (30%), two subjects in the dutasteride group had decreases in sperm count of greater than 90% from baseline at 52 weeks, with partial recovery at the 24 week follow-up. The possibility of reduced male fertility cannot be excluded."

It might be "unlikely", but I'd still drop dutasteride. and get back on finasteride. before trying for a baby. The question would be how early to switch, which sounds like something to discuss with a doctor.

Since dutasteride is even more powerful than finasteride, one should be extra vigilant with regards to its effects on health.

If you're going to plan for a baby, what would you do if you've been taking dutasteride for almost 2 years?
Quit and wait at least 6 months to a year before trying to conceive.

How long until it leaves your system?
Approximately 5 weeks for drug -- then you have to wait for 5AR enzymes to regenerate and DHT to come back online. Could take weeks or months for that process.

Could all this effect the baby regardless, once born?
Once born? No.
Before and during conception? Although likely rare, theoretically possible if enough dutasteride is present in semen.

Could this effect your chances of having a baby period?
5AR inhibitors have been linked to fertility issues in various studies, as posted above. They may make it more difficult to conceive. There is also the potential, however small, of dutasteride affecting the genital development of the baby if enough of it is contained in the ejaculate, while the baby is in gestation.

Basically, if you don't want to chance anything, get off the drug and give yourself a good 6months to a year waiting period. That's what I'd do, anyway... as well as fertility/hormone testing while on the drug and then after quitting, and thereafter every 3 months.

Can you cite your references for this? I am not referring to how long a full dose of dutasteride stays in a male who has popped a pill. References must include solid evidence that ejaculated semen placed inside a woman on Day 1 both contains Dutasteride, and that measureable amounts of Dutasteride continue to *remain* in the uterus for nearly 6 to 12 weeks, or long enough to affect the sexual development of the male fetus. If you do not have any data to support this, please refrain from saying this on this website.
