Going Bald, and how I am dealing with it.

Ever since I was 15 I have always had long hair. Loved the way it made me feel about myself, loved the compliments I have received from Women. When I hit 30, I noticed that my hair started to thin out on the top of my head.

I just kept ignoring it until one day I walked into the Sears Electronics dept. Sears often has the T.V and video camera display set up, and one of the cameras was facing over head. As I walked past the camera and looked at the T.V I noticed a really thin almost bald spot on the top of my head. It was really bad. At this point i realized that my time of having my long soft hair is coming to an end.

For another year I just kept ignoring the signs, and every time I took a shower I noticed that the once thinning spot on the top of my head is now completely bald, and the hair around that spot was thinning also.

recently I have accepted the fact that I am going bald, and that I have 2 options.

1) Try to hide the fact that I am going bald and look silly sporting the " Monk" hair style.
2) Just try to accept it and shave my head bald.

I chose option 2.

This has drastically effected my self esteem. Every time I go out with friends, or around Women I feel like the odd ball.

Agreed, but as a long hair myself I'd understand if you said you want your hair back. Would you consider taking medication for it?

Dude this looks very good. In all honesty I can't even say I liked you better with hair.

You seem to like heavy music and that goes well with the bald look and goaty too. Good call, no reason to hide yourself. Hold your head up high my friend!

I have very long hair also, likely longer than in pic #1. I can attest that it sucks to lose something you identify yourself so strongly with. I haven't shaved it yet, but I may so I can get the minoxidil in there better (no bald spot, but I am a receder)

But again you do look pretty badass with the shaved look, pretty metal honestly :punk:

Thanks for the positive responses and feedback. It is difficult to deal with, especially when some of my Female friends tell me I look like an axe murderer lol.

I have not considered medication for my balding issue, I have looked into taking Rogaine. As for hair implants I have decided to not even bother.

You could try finasteride as your hairline is still pretty good. No hassle in a pill a day honestly, nothing like the minoxidil application.

Not of a fan of the facial hair but you got a nice head shape and you look really young, I would never had guessed 30 or above.

With shorter hair you can get away with a bit of hairloss, but he likes rocking the long hair look and that demands 100% flawless hair with no visible hairloss whatsoever.

Even if you have a perfect hairline, the smallest bit of diffuse thinning on top or around the crown, will make it look a bit strange.

Fortunately for him though, he rocks the shaved look well, some guys aren't that lucky.

I agree. However, receding isn't as bad with long hair as diffuse thinning is. Up to NW2.5 long hair easily works as good as ever, provided the hair is still thick with no diffuse or crown thinning. NW2 young guys often have long(er) hair also.

A little thinness on top with a good hairline would still work as well. Most likely if there are real bald patches, those areas won't fill in completely. Always would remain more thin, but that doesn't mean that medication wouldn't do anything.

OP do you have a picture of how you wore your hair before you shaved it of? With a full shaved head it's hard to determine how much you've lost, and how much you could possibly safe with medication.
