Going through another dutasteride shed

Now I am going through another shed. My first shed started almost exactly three months ago and finished 3-4 weeks after it started.

I believe that this is a good sign because my hair improved a lot after the first shed and while it does look shitty right now on top and in the crown, I am very optimistic that in another month and a half it will look even better than it did a month ago. Of course it sucks in the meantime because now people can tell that I'm balding, but hey what can you do? Haha.

The shedding is a normal and expected effect of treatment. Because dutasteride triggers a growth cycle, the hair growth cycle becomes more synchronised. As a result, the hairs also enter the Telogen phase almost simultaneously. This explains why I'm shedding again almost exactly three months after the first time. I think that this shed will be less severe than the first one and I hope that the next one is even less severe than this one.

What happened the first time is that a lot of my hairs shed, and then grew in thicker. I suspect that the same thing will happen this time, except that this go-round they will grow in even thicker than they did in the first shed.

I am very happy about the fact that many people have told me, including my dermatologist, that the best responders to the drugs often shed the most of anyone. And I'm not going off the drug for any reason so I should reap the benefits in a few more months.

yep...keep the faith JM. I'm just completing my first shed being on Avo for almost 1 month now...Starting to see the beginning of regrowth. It'll be a bouncy up and down year but hopefully next December I should be in pretty good shape...sticking through it no matter what until 12 months and then reevaluate...

I've been on Propecia for just under two months now, and in the last few weeks I have seen some real nasty shedding. It isn't as bad as some of the stories on here (i.e. my hair line hasn't been destroyed - not yet anyway) but it's real scary to wake up in the morning and see 50 or so hairs (yes, I count them) lying on your pillow...and then there's the shower (one day I swear there must have been a couple of hundred)... and the back of my coat... and the comb.... :(

The few people I've confided in have said that can't see any difference in my hair, so hopefully it isn't too serious.

The thing is Jayman, if shedding is an expected side effect of the treatment why is there no mention of it in any of the clinical trials? Or as a side effect on the manufacturer's website? That still worries me. Though it's comforting that your dermatologist says it's a good sign...

Anyway, like H20 I'm sticking to it for 12 months no matter what.

Best of luck folks!
