I started to notice my frontal area and crown thinning back in 2009. It was still very minor at the time so I didn't pay much attention to it until my desired hair style was becoming more and more difficult to maintain and then that's when I basically came to a conclusion that I have to do something about it.

Some of you will look my pictures and think that my case of hair loss is pretty much nothing, and that I should be glad that I even have this much hair to begin with prior to my hair loss treatment regimen. But personally for me, it didn't change the fact that it degraded my self esteem a lot to the point where I would constantly have my head down in the elevator or on the bus because I would get insecure about the people behind me staring at my head, avoiding social events with friends, etc because of it. It was pretty much getting to me on a psychological level.

Hair loss sucks no matter how bad the condition is!

I have to admit that I was quite skeptical about treating hair loss in general even with something like Rogaine but I was just completely blown away at everyone's success stories. I basically felt like I had nothing to lose at this point (besides my hair :p) so I bit the bullet and took action.
I started by PMing some members in regards to their regimen and I basically decided to give the Big Three regimen (Finasteride, Minoxidil 5%, Nizoral shampoo) a try since it seemed to be the regimen that worked out very well for most of the members.

These are the pictures I posted prior to the regimen back in 2010 in the "Tell Your Story" section:

And recent pictures taken on 2/20/13:

The recent pictures were taken on towel dried hair after I applied my minoxidil so it generally would look a little thicker than what is up here, but you can clearly see the improvement on my hairline and crown. I honestly probably would of gotten better results if I haven't slacked on my regimen though. I only applied minoxidil once a day for 3 or 4 times a week and 0.5~1.25 finasteride every other day for the past few months and ditched Nizoral completely. But even then, I feel like i've been able to maintain what I have going on for me now just fine. I just don't really see much gain.

I started applying minoxidil twice a day again for the past week and plan on continuing the twice a day application for a while to see if I can get any more results. Although some may disagree, I feel like taking finasteride EOD at this point is okay. Im considering getting Nizoral again as well.

I also smoke marijuana almost on a daily basis and for some reason it causes my skin to produce a lot more sebum than if I didn't smoke so that might be one of the factors that causes hair loss for me as well. But im sure its just bull crap for the most part.

Im also looking into reducing the amount of stress I feel on a daily basis. I somehow doubt that my case of hair loss is stress induced but I know that its bad for your body in general and not just your hair. So its definitely something worth working on.

But as of now, I can say that I am quite satisfied with how things are going for me. I can style my hair however I want. I don't have to cancel plans with friends because of insecurities. I feel like I got some good weight off my shoulders from a little effort.

To anyone that's on the fence about this whole process, its definitely a commitment and it may not even work out for some of you but it never hurts to try!

Best Wishes

Current Regimen:
Finasteride 1.25mg daily or EOD
Minoxidil 5% Twice a day

Nice it seems like you've retained all of your hair from the previous pics. Any sides from finasteride?

Yeah, my hairline is almost how it was when I was back in high school. But I would say its still half of the thickness from before the time I started to even lose hair. But lucky for me I have really coarse hair so I can give it that volume just by blow drying my hair.
I did get a few minor sides from finasteride. Some testicle pain, loss of libido, clouded thoughts, and some depression, maybe even a little mood swing here and there. But nothing major and crippling to my life in general since those symptoms just kinda come and go for me in small bursts. I suppose im one of the luckier people out there since I read some posts on how finasteride ruined their lives and what not. I don't know if this helps or if its in my mind, but I really felt that a little exercise helped me get rid of the sides and even gave me a boost in my libido during those times.

Thanks for sharing, broseph. How old are you?

As I said in my intro post, I just took my first 0.625mg dose of finasteride yesterday and will be experimenting with EOD (no other treatments).

After I became self-conscious of my hair loss, I also got into the workout scene pretty hard. I'll be sure to get sufficient sleep and hit the gym every single day, as I have been for the last 2 months. Hopefully it prevents sides, but if nothing else I hope it will boost my well-being otherwise.

I really feel like sides are so blown out of proportion on these websites.

Im 25 right now. Thats cool, I started with 0.5mg finasteride too. You should experience almost no sides with 0.625mg. Just feel it out and see if you get the gain you desire on it, if not just bump up your dose, and if you feel heavy sides then you can always go back to a lower dose. I recommend adding some minoxidil 5% for faster results, but of course there has been many cases where finasteride alone gave people good results!

Yeah I hear you about the sides being blown of of proportion. That actually made me think about actually taking finasteride or not really haha. Especially those stories about gynecomastia and not being able to have an erection. I just said screw it and took it anyway haha.

The way I see it, the guys who don't get sides (vast majority) are far too busy chasing strange tail and upping other facets of their life to bother with hair loss forums. The guys with sides feel so deprived they want to air their grievances. That isn't to mitigate real sides. It just feels like guys who get sides are so manic.

I'm 25 as well, so that's comforting. I have no intention of minoxidil. I can't commit to twice/day topical applications. I'm looking to pop a pill and move on.

Thanks for the reply.

Well said, mind over matter. Based on what I saw on your introduction post, you should totally be fine with finasteride alone. Good luck
