I've been on these forums for years just reading, have only made an account now. My hairloss began (or i first noticed receeding hairline) 8 years ago when i was 18/19, it is not too bad and i can disguise it. I have a receeding hairline and have just started to notice a thinning spot developing on the crown.

This week, after contemplating for years i finally decided enough is enough and i want to do something before i leave it any longer. I booked an appointment with my GP ( i live in the uk) and was suprisingly quite nervous. For me this would be the first time i would discuss and therefore admit i have hairloss with anyone, so i was unsure of his reaction. My Gp has a full head of hair by the way and is in his 50's.

He basically told me that there is nothing i can do for baldness, regardless of what i read over the net. I told him i was eager to get on finesteride, becuase it is proven to at least slow down the process, and that would be good enough for me. He said that finesteride does more harm than good, and messing with your hormones is unwise. I said i have read a lot of positive results from people taking it in conjuction with minoxidil, he just responded with, "i have been a doctor for over 30 years and many people such as yourself come in to see me, they all waste their money on countless cures...really there is nothing you can do, believe me." By this time i was really pissed off, he told me if i wanted to take it, i would do so by my own risk, he suggested that i should see a hormone specialist if i were to take it.

I really am not sure what to do, if i should pay to see a private consultant hairloss specialist for peace of mind, or to just order proscar from the net.
I'm really not sure if my GP knows what he is talking about or is just plain ignorant. Any help would be greatly appreciated, i'm currently only using Nizoral, and i can say it has really helped me.

sounds like a wacko to me, probably does not write scripts for birth control and believes calico cats are the devil

take a referal or get another GP, or just buy it online without a script

Sorry to hear that, my friend.

Your doctor is wrong. There are FDA-proven treatments for reversing, halting, and slowing down hairloss.

To be honest, I think your doctor sounds like a dick, who is irrespective of your wants and expectations.

Talk to another doctor.

Not much point in going to your GP. Its not an illness or disease, and thats all they're concerned with. What benefit can he gain from it if you get side effects or see no results.

The sad thing is, he is probably right. F*cking with your hormones isnt the greatest idea in the world, but as of right now, its our only choice.

Although Ive been messing with my hormones for the last 10 years and suprisingly, the body recovers pretty quickly. I imagine most people who stop finasteride for sides are back to normal within 2-3 months.

When it comes to treating male pattern baldness your doctor is an IDIOT!

He said he's been a doctor for over 30 years and has never seen anything work. finasteride., dutasteride., and other medications designed to treat the androgen side of our ailment have only been available for about 9 years IIRC. dutasteride. came out in 2002 IIRC. So what does being a doctor for over 30 years have to do with anything?

Does he know that finasteride. and dutasteride. can substantially reduce the chances of contracting prostate cancer? Does he know that men with male pattern baldness have too much DHT or are too "sensitive" to DHT and this might cause a MYRIAD of other non-male pattern baldness health related problems? Does he know that male pattern baldness is a marker for other health related problems?

Does he know ANYTHING about the chemicals Dr. Proctor and other doctors advocate? Does he know anything about possible herbal treatments that might help? Has he ever researched patents designed to treat male pattern baldness?

What if he was born in 1850, like me - LOL, and thought bleeding patients was the only way to go for certain ailments. Things change, science advances, etc.

Oh, why go on, your doctor is an IDIOT! It's just that plain and simple IMHO.

I was like him before doing some research. I was TOTALLY wrong btw.

He said something to you that just might be one of the most intelligent statements that a doctor can make to someone with hair loss. He told you to see an endocrinologist.

You have a classy doctor, my friend. He may not understand the drugs, but at least he understands their effects.

Good advice, but he should NOT make generalized negative statements when he really knows nothing about the ailment being discussed.

One of the "effects" of finasteride. is to substantially diminish the chances of contracting prostate cancer, which is the number TWO killer of men IIRC.

Sorry Doctor we disagree on this one!

I disagree with is doctor about his thoughts regarding the drug. However, I don't disagree with seeing an endocrinologist and keeping your hormones carefully monitored. In fact, that idea is about as close to genius as any physican gets.

If he's been a doctor for 30 years, he's probably old-fashioned when it comes to hair loss. He probably just sees thing like finasteride and dutasteride as sugar pills. Hard to get him away from that mentality when up until recently finasteride didn't exist.

I really appreciate all your feedback. Not sure if he is part genius, part moron. Parts of me are really worried about taking a hormone altering drug, been contemplating it for 7 years now. Other parts of me just think, F*&k it, i will really regret at least not trying to fight back. At least alot of my hairloss anxiety will subside with me doing something about it instead of constantly thinking about eventual baldness, and how i will eventually have to deal with a whole new appearance and how i "think" others will alter their perception of me.
