GPS questions

I love travelling but I'm terrible with maps, so I thought a GPS device might be helpful.

I find GPS devices fascinating but I know very little about them, so maybe you can help me:

a) Should I buy one?

b) How do they work?

c) Are they just for drivers or can you use them while you're walking?

d) Everyone speaks wonders of TomTom, is it really the best brand?

I've given up on the idea. Apparently, you have to pay a monthly fee and that's not an option to me.
