Growing long hair without mullet

Everytime I've tried to grow my hair long, I've ended up with something that looks like a mullet and i just go to the barber and get it buzzed and start again. not very smart i know.

how do i grow my hair long without it looking like a mullet? like the hair on the back of my head grows faster...i don't know it's really strange. I just hate the in between phases where it just looks goofy and never make it the end. any advice?

Grow the top layers of your hair, but have the back cut shorter. You might want to get thicker sections thinned slightly. A good stylist or barber will be able to advise. Also, use a moisturising shampoo and conditioner, and a 'soft wax'-type product.
