Hair diameter question

When I examine lost hairs, I've noticed that a number of them *suddenly* get thinner. I suppose a graphical representation of what happens would look like this:

////////////////-------------

The hair shaft instantly goes from normal thickness to wiry and *thin*. Granted, it's a fairly small percentage of my hairs that do this, but I see it happen often enough that it piques my curiosity. And on very rare occasion, I see the hair shaft go back and forth between thick and thin.

Anyone have any clue what could cause something like this?

Clever :)

I worded that poorly. Why would there be such a sudden change instead of a gradual change in diameter?

I'm serious... My hairs do the same thing...they're like an inch wide, then dissappear (being facetious of course). It's genetic, man. It can take years, or it can take months for it to happen. If you're not poppin' the sh*t already, I'd get started as soon as possible. You probably have a very aggressive bout of male pattern baldness, I'd get on spironolactone too If I were you. Only prob with spironolactone is it makes your head smell like a skunk if you use minoxidil. But if it works it's well worth the 20 minutes of stink :p

Yea, my hair loss is ridiculously aggressive. I think I have 5 month pics somewhere on the forums here.

I thought about actually replacing finasteride with spironolactone. I'm wary of the side effects, especially after the results of the 7 year study.

Which is better, the 2% or 5%? I've heard 2% absorbs better but smells. The 5%, even if it doesn't absorb as well, would seemingly be better simply because it's much more concentrated. And it doesn't smell.

I'm using 5% and it's a b**ch to apply if you have any amount of hair on your head. Makes it look like sh*t too. I'd prolly go with 2% first to see how it works.

Is there any other source for spironolactone other than Dr. Lee's site?

I kind of have the same situation. It's very depressing to look at:

$$$$$$$$######======----------o
Thick -------------------------------->Thin

The hair above is probably 3 inches long so it takes about my hair 3 months to completely die. Sweet. Considering I probably lose 30 of these hairs a day, and there are about 20,000 hairs left on the top of my head.. I would say I have 2 years left before my hair is so thin i might as well have a chrome dome.

If god controls the weather surley he woud make the rain at least 2% minoxidil.

What's the deal with the 7-year propecia studies?

As near as I can tell, this study has not been released yet (although it is due out). You MAY be referring to the Proscar cancer study, which ran for 7 years and was released this year.

That study did not look at hair growth related issues.

Hope this helps.

Bomb, how much longer do you think you'll have a costmetically acceptable head of hair?

If it weren't for couvre, I'd have my hair cut really short or shaved now. But even that is running its course and I'll probably have to shave everything in about a month or two. :(

If my rate of loss continues I would suspect maybe another 5 - 6 months. I expect to be using a concealer next summer. That's going to be sad.

Not yet, I haven't lost hope actually. I think things may have slowed down a little, but minoxidil has not regrown *anything* and it's been a solid 3 months on the PG-Free stuff. I guess i konw i'm just continuing to thin because my hair quality sucks.

I am losing less hairs in the shower (about 20 instead of 50). So i think my rate has slowed down. Cosmetically acceptable to me as a diffuse thinner is a situation where someone does not notice my scalp when looking at my hair in a medium light.

I've had minoxidil regrow some hair on my temples and such where it's been dripping accidentally. Unfortunately, the top is still thin, I'm afraid of hair cuts, and I still have to use a concealer.

I *think* that I'm losing hair at a far slower rate now but will add spironolactone and a multivitamin to try to get at much mileage out of my hair before I have to call it quits.
