Two problems, dying your hair will cause damage to the follicles and possibly make them thinner. Secondly (assuming you’re a white male) dying the hair black will contrast with the whiteness of the scalp, making the hair appear thinner. Try a light brown for best coverage.

I highlighted my med brown hair for years and am now pretty convinced it's caused me a lot of problems. I'd advise against it.

You can, but won't do your hair any favours

My girlfriend is a hairdresser, if you’re going to dye your hair she recommends using highlights as opposed to bleach/peroxide, it does nowhere near as much damage. But still does cause damage, especially in the long run.

I used it for far too many years, and yes it does make the hair suffer after time.

When you say highlights as opposed to bleach/peroxide the highlights were done using bleach/peroxide. They may use some vegetable alternative now, but mine were always done using the hard stuff

if your using bleach or ammonia based dyes then yea that will mess up ur hair. if you're using something like jsut for men mainly to cover grays that's good because it doesn't have ammonia.
