i know that the fact is that dyeing your hair can not so much CAUSE hair loss, as it is based on hormones and genetics. i've eased up on the hairdye, though, since i've started trying to deal with my recession.

i'm curious to hear this forum's members' opinions, though, on whether or not dyeing your hair can actually accelerate pre-determined hairloss and to what extent.

hair dyes can cause loss if you are sensitive to the chemicals. the inflammation caused by color treatments may contribute to loss. not likely cause permanant loss but if you have the tendancy for loss it could possibly exasperate it.

Dyeing hair does not cause hair loss but overdoing it can affect the condition of the hair for some people and even make the strands brittle...women get this problem sometimes but you have to dye it like every week to get issues like this.

I went through this with my Trichologist some time back as I colour my hair about once a month. I also have eased up a bit to leave it as long as possible.

The topical treatments do have a habit of taking colour out of coloured hair so its all a difficult balancing act.

am considering getting blonde streaks put in my hair to make it appear thicker. If I don't get the dye all the way down to the roots will this stop the chemicals from causing any damage if I jus get the tips lightened?

I just want to dye my scalp so it is not so obvious.

As for hair loss, hormones start it, but there is a chain reaction with many aspects, including immune system attack of the follicle (inflammation). If the dye gives you inflammation, maybe that could cause hair loss.

Dyes do damage the hair strand, but that is a problem for long hair, which must last long to grow long. I trim my short hair often, so I don't have to worry about it.

Sunless tanner is safe, but mine is not making me darker. WTF?

But if anyone could ask their doctor more about the effects on the roots, I'd like to know. Specifically I want to know if it can have an effect even if I don't notice the inflammation. With the red covered by brown it may be hard to notice.

I used to do this, it works pretty well but my pillows used to be a mess, :)
The best thing is that if anyone did ever noticed they'd just think you hadn't washed your hair dye out properly instead of concealing hairloss, a slight shading is enough. I later heard that it was bad for the scalp so I stopped.
