Hair Loss Advice For 20 Year Old On Finasteride

Hey everyone,

I’m going to be honest, I’m in desperate need of some feedback.

I’m 20 years old and I didn’t notice I had hair that was thinning until about a week ago, when I realized I have a pretty huge bald spot on my crown. My hairline has always been pretty bad, but it looks like it hasn’t changed at all the past few years. I started finasteride 5 days ago and am now wondering if there is any way I can stop this process. I don’t really care about making it temporarily look better (which is what it sounds like minoxidil does), I just want to stop this process. I would be completely okay with never getting the hair back on the crown, but do I have a chance at making it past 30 with the hair I currently have?

I will attach pictures.

What’s the timeline given that my crown is completely bald, I’m 20, and just started finasteride and am planning on continuing indefinitely?

We can’t predict the future. For some, finasteride doesn’t work at all. For some it works for 2 yrs, 5 yrs, or even 10-20+ if ur lucky. Ill say that since you started balding younger like the rest of us, then you’ll probably not be as lucky, but there’s a chance you’ll make it to 30+

There was a study done that showed that finasteride had an 87% success rate after 10 years. You can't know for sure how well finasteride will maintain your hair into the future, but the odds in its favour are very high. If you find it is not strong enough in your case, you can switch to its more powerful alternative dutasteride.

Regarding minoxidil, there is scientific evidence that it does interfere with the underlying balding process rather than being purely a growth stimulant.

What do you think the chances are that I make it to 30 given that my hair loss is likely aggressive?

Is it possible for finasteride to stop it completely?

I appreciate your response! Thank you for helping me, I'm seriously completely manic right now and have been for weeks. If my hair loss is aggressive, which I assume it is, does finasteride still work the same? Can it block the hair loss entirely?

And about the minoxidil: Does it actually slow the process of balding?

I can’t tell you as it’s unpredictable. You’ll have to give finasteride a shot first and see if it even works for u. If it does it’ll probably work for around 5 yrs if ur hair loss is thhat bad, then u can take dutasteride .5 mg every orher day while still taking finasteride. That could lengthen it another 5 or so years. + make sure ur on minoxidil the whole time and dermaroll!

If ur lucky tho finasteride will halt your hair loss for over a decade or 2.

& finasteride doesnt completely stop hair loss. It just slows it down extremely for those who respond to it & even regrowth for some.
