Hair loss in a family where it's unheard of....

I began to notice a receding hairline at around the age of 17. I'm now 21 and it's gotten noticably worse. My father's 50 and has a full head of hair. My grandfathers, great grandfathers on both sides of the family have died with full heads of hair. My brother is 19 and his hair is showing no signs of receding. The only thing I can think of is I'm the least active and have the worst diet of anyone in my family. Ever since I became involved with computers around 7th grade. I've drank almost nothing but caffinated soda since that time. About a week ago I cut out soda and sugary foods all together and started eating a wider variety of foods. I'm hoping this will help, but from what I've read of other posts on this message board most other people don't believe diet affects hair loss very much.

Diet can effect hair health in general and malnourishment can lead to weaker hair or hair loss. Laying off the sweets and eating a variety of foods is a good move, not only for hair benefits but also for overall health.

Having said that, male pattern baldness is a genetically inherited trait and you will want to see a qualified dermatologist to diagnose your problem. That way you can make sure that you are experiencing male pattern baldness (especially considering no one on both sides of your family has exhibited symptoms).
