Hair loss or mature hairline?

Hi guys.

Right my hairline has been like this since I was 21 (I am 23 now), but I am unsure whether this is down to a mature hairline or if I am really losing my hair. See pics below.

If I were to pull my hair as tight in as possible in at any area of my head all I will lose at max is 3 strands of hair. I am confused on whether I am suffering from male pattern baldness especially after reading the following article. (due to having a widows peak)

http://www.baldingblog.com/2006/10/06/j ... th-photos/

My hairline is similar to clintons, like him, it goes in slightly on either side and yet he has a juvenile hairline.

Thanks guys.

It looks great dude, I don't think you need to worry. The only way to tell if it's a mature hairline or if it's male pattern baldness is if you're losing hair. Keep these pics, maybe take a couple more, and then take another set in 6 months and then in a year.

If it's still the same, there's almost certainly no male pattern baldness.

theres no hairloss at all then, no recession

Thanks for your input kerzy.

Is it normal for the sides to go up a bit forming a widows peak? My hairline is not 100% straight for example. Left hand side goes in more then the RHS.

Thanks for your comment. Yeah, got it cut today, hairdresser told me that I have a good set of hair and that it is medium-fine. I have compared my hair to my hair from photos that are 2 years old and my hairline has always been a bit wonky. Of course. my hairline is not the same as when I was 17 yrs old, it was completely straight then. Developed a small M at 18, and it has stayed like this since. Problem I have now is trying to figure out if this is a natural thing that occurs with age, or if it is because I am receeding.

If it's been like this for a few years now with no change, it's very likely that there's no male pattern baldness. People can never be objective about their own pics. I can tell you now, it looks absolutely fine right now.

I really don't think you have anything to worry about. Take pics in a year and see if there's a change; if there isn't, you're free of male pattern baldness.

And even if there is, you'll have plenty of time to jump on a treatment, with only a few years until there's some real good hair multiplication technology out there (hopefully).

You're probably going to be fine.

Yeah, well I started becoming paranoid due to my older brother telling me that I will lose my hair (yes sounds stupid I know) and I asked one hairdresser if my hairline was receeding and she said yes. As you can see I don't have a straight hairline for example. Saying that it took me to point this out before she noticed it (she couldn't notice it otherwise). There is male pattern baldness in my family, one uncle is bald, my other uncles are receeded, which is a cause of concern, but I also have one uncle that has a thick set of hair. My grandad is bald. My brother has a heavier receeded hairline then me (is a year older), but has hair.

Thanks again.

There's nothing wrong with being paranoid, and I think it's natural to worry about things like this. I just don't think you have a problem.

There's another thing that counts strongly in your favour, too. If you took pics again a year from now, and you were receding, you'd have still caught it very early. This gives you fantastic chances to stop the progression in its tracks with the right treatment. And, perhaps more importantly, if you wanted to sort things out 4-5 years down the line you'd be approaching a time when excellent treatments like hair multiplication are likely to come out (I would hope). So I think you're going to be alright. You've probably just got a mature hairline. If it does turn out to be receding, you've got a good chance of combating that.

Yep that's why I posted, I know this isn't an issue atm, but I wanted to catch this very early on, so I can slow down the process (if I do in future develop male pattern baldness).

Would hair multiplication be expensive? and how close are they in making a breakthrough (I could start saving up now as a continguiency plan)...

Due to the paranoia I have lately been taking care of my hair. I have been applying a tiny amount of olive oil onto my hair as a replacement for wax/gel (if I need to use a product). And have started taking a course of "Nourkin" tablets/cod liver oil.

I understand how easy it is to be paranoid about your hair, but I wouldn't start taking supplements and whatnot at this stage. It'll make you focus on a problem, which will make it seem real (whether it is or not). Having said that, cod liver oil is a solid supplement for general health.

Nobody knows how close hair multiplication is for sure. There are four or five companies working on this kind of technology. The one I'm most familiar with is Intercytex, a British company. They've completed Phase II trials, which were reported to be successful. This means the treatment is, according to the initial signs, looking to be safe and effective. To market they need to complete Phase III trials. This would probably take about two years. My assumption is that they won't start this until 2010, and that there will be perhaps another 2 years before the product is cleared and made marketable. This means we're looking at a date around 2014. I can't emphasize enough, however, that this is purely speculation. It could be 20 years, for all we know.

In terms of cost, again, nobody knows. If it's comparable to hair transplants, it'd probably be in the $10,000 to $20,000 ballpark. But it may not be in that region.

My advice is to stop focusing on it, take pics in 6 months or a year, and make a decision then. There's no point in saving for a contingency plan if what you're saving for isn't going to happen.
