Hair much thinner after 3 months on finasteride

So i've been on finasteride for the past 3 months, started taking 0.5mg everday on 20th july for the first 2 months then bumped up to 1mg. I'm both a receder and a diffuse thinner, although my temples are nw1.5-2.

Just some history. I started noticing i was losing more hair on the shower in Jan/Feb 2012. I thought at the time that i might have been losing a bit more due to the stress of my midsessional exams, as my hair was still really thick on top. I noticed in march that i could kinda see my scalp through my hairline when standing under a bright light, it was only when I was talking about this to my barber in the easter holidays when he said 'yeah you're hair seems much thinner on top, you might be going bald'. Everday i noticed my hair seemed thinner and thinner and once i read that a sign of male pattern baldness is a receded hairline i realised that my right temple had started to recede, i was mortified, I basically had male pattern baldness. My maternal grandfather's an nw7, his sons are an nw4 and nw6. My dad's hair has thinned but he still has his hairline, although the thinning only started once he was on blood pressure meds. Although there are men on his side too which have started to lose their hair.

I was gonna start taking finasteride last summer but money was tight so decided to take saw palmetto, thinking it might have the same, albiet weaker, effect. It didn't do much, i didn't see a reduction in hairfall but i stuck with it for a year. My hair progressively thinned throughout that time though once i stopped for a month before taking finasteride, i noticed my hair fall had increased.

For the past few weeks i've been noticing a whole lot of hair and my scalp has really thinned out, more so at the front, i thought that as i was basically shedding before the treatment that it would just slow down, instead it's just accelerated and i'm worried that it'll either miniturise or never grow back.

Will I get back what has been lost for the past few months, is finasteride even working?

I would like to add that there has been some other effects, some good some bad. One, the itching and excess sebum has basically disappeared, the finasteride has kinda made my scalp seem dry after getting so used to the oilyness, saw palmetto just used to make this worse on occassions. Two, my body hair has been thinning out, so has my nose hair, something i least expected. I have been noticing some acne here and there.
Lastly, my semen is so watery it's unbelieveable, it's like i'm just playing around with a waterpistol. I had this problem with saw palmetto but this is like a whole new level.

likely a shed. almost everyone has a shed when starting finasteride. Specifically in the 2-4 month time. You will almost assuredly get it back, and if lucky get some regrowth(more likely if on both finasteride and minoxidil)

Yeah it could be a shed. It's just that for the past 1.5 years i've been 'shedding' anyway, losing quite a bit of hair in the shower, albiet more now.

I am thinking of adding minoxidil but i'm worried that it'll cause more shedding and that my hair will look really screwed, i mean it hasn't been established for me whether these hairs I'm losing are even going to grow back thicker or at all. For the past 1.5 years it when i've lost hair, it seemed as if it never grew back.

so many people on the internet have claimed that their hair got drastically thinner after taking finasteride. i'm yet to see pics showing this though.

Be sure to check into my thread in the success section, I'm a month in and so far so good :D

Its unfortunate some people experience shedding but hopefully its just the growth cycles resyncing to grow thicker hair.

Yeah i'm trying to keep optimistic about regrowth, i mean I do see some hairs that weren't there before, it's just the when you've seen accounts of people who found themselves in perpetual sheds do you get worried.

Also i've seen your progression threads and I gotta say you are doing really well. Heres hoping to see you get really good results so I can feel that little bit more optimistic about my own situation.

The same thing happened to me around the 3 month mark. Over a year later I'm still as thin as I was when I noticed it after starting finasteride, but I guess the good news is that I think it hasn't become worse since I initially noticed it.

Are you still shedding though? Also if you are and it hasn't changed does that mean there was regrowth happening along with the shedding?

Also I can't stop staring at your avatar. Dem eyes...

I didn't ever notice losing more hairs than usual (in my hands/shower) I just looked at my hair one day, somewhere around the 3 month mark, and noticed that I could see my scalp through my hair. Before starting finasteride it wasn't like that. It makes me think that finasteride may have pushed out the weaker hairs or something. As far as I can tell my hair looks fairly similar to the way it did at that 3 month mark, although to be honest ever since I noticed my hair being thinner I don't look at it too often.
