i started shaving my head when i started noticing loss and now that it grew a bit i use gel to comb over etc..
and sometimes i get too lazy so i just go to sleep with the gel on my hair.
after doing this numerous times i feel like i loose more hair. can this be true?

I don´t think this can be true. I also sleep with gel in my hair and I don´t notice any major difference.

i used to use this curling foam when i was losing and had the big curly mop things going on, i think it irritated my scalp, i cannot imaging that stuff sitting on the scalp helping

I don't think that's true.

Gel just makes them much thinner that they are.

Applying less gel might make them look better,
than a complete wet look when dripping too much of it.

templemonk,

Go to a health food store or an organic grocery store and get some gel there. I bought a bottle of thickening gel from wild oats and all of the ingredients are basically natural oils and it sounds like it would do GOOD if it went onto my scalp.

If I had to guess....I would say it might be an illusion. We loose hairs throughout the day and night. The effect of using gel on your hair and going to sleep with it still on would be that hair that would normally, inconspicuously fall off in our sleep and onto our pillow/bed actually says stuck to our existing/healthy hair, "cemented" by the gel. Now when you wake up in the morning and run your fingers through your hair more hair comes off all at once because it was "accumulating", gelled on to still attached hair instead of just being allowed to fall off and get "lost" in your sheets, so to speak.

This would be my guess for the average hair product that isn't harmful. There are some products, however, that cause irritation to the scalp and may cause shedding. Only you can determine if this is the case.
