http://www.baldingblog.com/2009/01/23/i ... -the-root/

Just found the above link, basically Rassman is saying that this is usually a sign of a underlying disease.

I remember reading few stories where guys mentioned that the falling hair are thicker towards the outer end and thinner towards the root. In Androgenetic Alopecia, the hair gets thinner at the end of the cycle Not during the anagen phase - which is what we are seeing in our cases.

If you have the above mentioned symptom, please do reply to this thread, I just wanna ask a few questions.

Well well well .. I've always been open to the fact that my hair-loss is abnormal and might not just be male pattern baldness, it is all over my head(especially the sides) but also includes a more prominent receding hairline and thinning crown which is commonly associated with male pattern baldness. One thing I noticed was that the hair was thinner towards the bulb at the end of a loose hair. I thought this was a particularly bad sign and that that hair would either not come back or would come back a lot thinner.

I guess this doesn't make a difference to me anyways because I've had blood tests and the results have come back normal and even if I did have an underlying disease no-one would believe me.

Ask me any questions anyways I'll be happy to answer them.

P.s : I'm 19.

I have this also ! Notice some hairs falling to be thinner where the bulb is and thicker in the end. My hairloss is kind of strange but it has to be Androgenetic Alopecia due to my family history of Androgenetic Alopecia. Because I'm thining and receeding at the front and hairline/temples but in the top middle of the scalp and sides and all the way back to the neck my hair is thick with good density and there is huge contrast with the front beeing thin.

I've got it too. I believe the shedded hair gets thinner towards the root because the new hair underneath that pushes it out takes away all the nutrition from the old hair.

black dot is definitely Not a good sign. In Androgenetic Alopecia, there should be a white dot, I think a black dot is a sign of alopecia areata.

It has nothing to do with nutrition, its a sign of something else. I'm currently researching that and will let you guys know as soon as I find something concrete.

Ok so following are my questions:

1. How old were you when your hairloss started?
2. Do you have excessive body hair?
3. Is baldness in your family - by baldness I mean brother/father/grandfather with NW4+.
4. Are you on hairloss drugs and are they working?
5. Are your hair over your ears and/or at the back of your head(near the neck) thinning too?
6. Do you have a somewhat coarse voice?
7. Did you see any mood changes in your personality about the same time hairloss started? (by mood, I mean depression, less willing to talk, etc).
8. How old are you now and what's your hairloss status?

I really appreciate anyone, with the symptom mentioned in my OP, who answers my questions. Thanks!

1- At time of puberty 12, really took off at age 23
2- More body and facial hair than most asians, i'm chinese
3- Father is nw1, mom's brother is nw7 dammit
4- Big 3, no still diffusing
5- All hair on my head is affected and thinning, sides, back and nape
6- Voice is somewhat course, deep
7- Was stressed and depressed when hairloss started, made it worse
8- 30 years old, diffuse nw2-3

Hope that answers some questions. Had a bunch of test done all came back normal. I just have male pattern baldness. When my male pattern baldness started, I noticed thick tips on hairs, and thinning towards the bulb too. Now all my hairs are just thin :sobbing:

Ok just to clarify because I see these practically everyday, what are they supposed to mean? I thought the thin white bulb was accumulated DHT or something...guess not.

Someone here said it's because the new hair underneath is stealing the nutrients from the old hair. Sounds kind of silly, but does anyone else here know why this phenomenon happens? I don't know why but it seems like if I had a hair loss condition that was different than male pattern baldness I would be a little happier. Sounds stupid I know. I just hate male pattern baldness more than one could imagine.

Could it be possible that this thinner at the root thing be caused by finasteride? E.G someone does not have male pattern baldness but gets on finasteride, finasteride then changes their hormone level slightly and triggers something like a thyroid condition which then causes this tinner at the roots effect? This is just a wild guess and not to alet anyone, just throwing theories around.

i have a thyroid problem and have just started meds for it. i too have thinner hair at the root and thicker a the end. Im pretty sure its just normal though. i seen that rassman thing a while back. doesnt change anything. basically it means the hair has distrophy and whats causing that distrophy is Androgenetic Alopecia.

You can see how normal this is just by looking at how many of you just replied to this topic in a day. sorry but just regular balding lol :(

Guess this thread is officially proof that those experiencing it are balding.

I mean, if you do not have this, then how could you be thinning? Obviously when a hair sheds it will be thinner at the root, because there's no reason why it should be the same thickness because you are again, thinning. A 3-4 inch hair can easily have thinned within the period it was growing (which would be several months for 3-4 inches of growth) so it only makes sense.
