Hairloss Shampoo

Hi guys, recently I have been using Alterna Volume Restore Shampoo and conditioner, which is supposed to thicken then hair by swelling the shaft and providing it with proteins, whilst fighting 'common causes of hairloss' it does contain saw palmetto although I have used shampoo with this in before I wasnt aware of my hairloss so I can't judge. However, I've been using it for a few weeks now and I'm losing more hiar now than I ever have, its pulling out up to 5 hair strands from one run through of my hair when shampooing and can find about 20 at a time in the shower and I'm wondering if it is the shampoo, I'd hope that perhaps it's this 'shedding' phase associated with using products on the scalp that reduce dht. In which case I know that this might be working a little.

I know there is debate on wether saw palmetto is effective, but if this is happening, surely something is working? I can't be losing this much hair as a natural progression can I?

Just as extra info, when I started this I stopped using nizoral twice weekly due to the fact that I've been going out a lot and have only been using nizoral when I'm just in the house. So maybe that is a contributing factor that my scalp dht is no longer being reduced by the nizoral, but even still?

ps. the itching I used to get has stopped since using this. and my hair has thickened from the glycerin causing my hair to be quite a lot more full looking even if my hair is feeling increasing less dense. However, in the last 2-4 weeks, I feel that I have thinnined considerably around the temples. But you can never really judge for sure can you? when you see your hair on a day to day basis.

these are the shampoos ingredients:

Aqua/Water/Eau, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Methyl 2-Sulfolaurate, Disodium 2-Sulfolaurate, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Cetrimonium Chloride, Silicone Quaternium-16, Silicone Quaternium-8, Methyl Gluceth-10, PEG-150 Distearate, Lauramide MEA, Rice Amino Acids, Panthenol, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Disteareth-75 IPDI, Serenoa Serrulata Fruit Extract, Paullinia Cupana Seed Extract, Undeceth-11, Panthenyl Hydroxypropyl Steardimonium Chloride, Butyloctanol, Polyquaternium-55, Propylene Glycol, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein PG-Propyl Silanetriol, Tetrasodium EDTA, Undeceth-5, Aminomethyl Propanol, Wasabia Japonica Root Extract, Hydrolyzed Pearl, Zinc Gluconate, Tocopherol Acetate, Threonine, Retinyl Palmitate, Phosphorus, Ornithine Decarboxy

I also use the conditioner to go with it. http://www.alternauk.com/categories/alt ... eader=true

my suggestion is you go back on nizorol to see what happens. if you still notice the shedding, then change the shampoo. i'd stay away from parabens and sodium lauryl sulfate. i don't see those ingredients in that list though so it looks ok.

The shampoo (and the conditioner) is free of sulphates, synthetic colours, DEA, TEA, Phthalates, mineral oils, Parrafins, PABA, Petroleum etc.

I only discovered yesterday that the bottle says it contains Azeliac Acid, which I understand is an inhibitor of DHT.

I just hope that this is perhaps shedding because the ingredients are helping a bit. Because even my initial bout of thinning is nothing compared to what I'm experiencing at the moment, I'm getting not one but sometimes about 5 hairs when I run my hands through and I was never able to see my scalp before and now I can if I ruffle my hair or it blows in the wind, I also appear to have progressed from a NW1, to a NW2 and worsening just in the last ~7 weeks.

Thanks for your advice, I'm back on Nizoral now and I'll see how it goes. :dunno:

It does, but I only use it twice a week. If I knew of any alternatives that used 1 or 2% Ketoconazole I would definitely be purchasing them.

I'm on my full second week back on Nizoral and I have already seen a noticeable decline in hair fall in the last couple of days. Although it's benefits are mild, it seems that while I was on it, it was doing quite a good job at maintaining my hair than without it.

I just wished I'd never stopped using it, I would of had a lot more time to ponder minoxidil, and all this hair that I've lost could have easily been a shed, instead now when I start minoxidil I need to go though further loss. Such a waste, and such a useful shampoo.

I'm about to run out of Nizoral, and although I like it for the maintenance factor, if you have any suggestions on SLS free Ketoconazole shampoo? :)

chr1s, I regard to your suggestion, the Nizoral appears to be reducing the amount of hair that I'm loosing, which could mean that I'm losing the hair that the Nizoral was helping to maintain. I'll keep up with the Nizoral and I intend to continue it long term indefinitely. I might be able to give a bit of a review on the Alterna Shampoo afterwards.
