Help! Can I use Rogaine when scalp is pink and itchy?

Hi there, after doing a lot of research and having male pattern baldness confirmed, I am about to start on finasteride.
My only concern is that my hairdresser says that my scalp is quite pink where it is thinning as though it is irritated from something and it is also itchy where my hair is thinning. Is that usual for male pattern baldness?
My question is: Am I able to use Rogaine (Minoxidil) at all to try and get my lost hair back when my scalp is pink and itchy? Is the inflammation something that comes with the hair loss problem or what? The instructions on Rogaine box say you shouldn't use the product if your skin is inflamed. Does this refer to before you use the product (i.e. inflamed before you use it?) or does it refer to if you get a bigger inflammation reaction from the product?

Update: I now read that pink / red skin and a little itchiness is a common symptom of male pattern baldness. Is this true? 8)
