ok so i started propecia yesterday, taking .5mg a day, i want to get off rogaine, how bad is it going to be basically the positives from taking this out weigh the negatives, i know i will never go back to a great hair line like i had before when i was younger and taking this everyday and looking at my hair is making me so depressed... for the past two weeks i have been taking it only at night. i have been on it for 5 months, i have a few small vellous hair but its just makes me so depressed applying this crap and then seeing basically small non existent hairs... any suggestions on getting of of this...i have definately not regained anything amazing from this stuff only small hairs that are not even noticeable.

thanks

You’ve only been on it for 5 months, & only once a day. You’ve got to give it a year for twice a day to give it a chance.

i've been on it for 5months twice a day, last week or so only once a day at night... the thought of putting this stuff on is just depressing i have small vellous hairs but nice terminal hairs have gone by bye. the stuff makes me paranoid, i have chose to pop a propecia pill a day instead, see how that works out. my hairline has gotten a little worse since starting it...i know for a fact this stuff will never ever ever give me the hairline i once had....over all i have thick hair and decided to just hang on to that instead...i have no thinning on crown at all except temples moving back, which rogaine was not helpin with the process, 50 new hair from this stuff around my hairline still does not put it at where i want. it doesn't even change how my hair looks, the benefits of putting this stuff of out weigh the $ cost and mental cost. i hope some of you realize that as well who still have a decent hairline, that no this stuff will not get you back to where you want it to be, and to maintain your hair by rubbing crap in everyday with a constant reminder, it is not worth it. now if your bald on top then go ahead and use rogaine cause thats all you got. i threw away my bottle of rogaine..it was tough but i feel a relief... i also popped a .5mg propecia today...thanks guys

As the other guy said, it takes 1 full year to see the results of this stuff. Sometimes the regrowth even kicks in shortly after 12 months for SOME.

If you're depressed now about it, you will be even more once you STOP the foam and you lose whatever you've gained from it. This stuff is so easy to apply and cheap, if you care that much about your hair where it makes you depressed then you should stick with it. These things are long-term commitments. You at least do not give it the full 1-year before making any evaluation of how well it worked or did not work.

You're almost HALF way there. Just STICK with it!!! A lot of those vellous will probably go terminal. You need to understand that it takes time for hair just to GROW and you have to figure into play how long a hair cycle lasts. You're not going to instantly go from no hair, to vellous hair, to a full thick terminal hair. It's probably going to take a few full hair cycles and each subsequent one a thicker hair will likely pop out. This is why it takes at least one year to evaluate.

It's good that you're on finasteride now as well, but you're results of finasteride alone is NOT going to be anywhere near as good as if you just keep using the foam. Are you using the Big 3? Are you shampooing with the new Revita 5x per week or at LEAST Nizoral every 3 days?

You also have Spectral DNC you can switch to if you don't like the results of the foam in 12-15 months. It's minoxidil with a number of other proven regrowth ingredients as well. I would stick with the foam for now though because it's easy to apply and actually has a cosmetic effect on the hair while Spectral DNC has a negative cosmetic effect.

You have other weapons still at your disposal. Tricomin/Folligen in addition to the minoxidil, spironolactone cream, Retin-A, etc. Don't give in. I'm not sure why you'd be depressed, you should be happy that you're going to get some new hairs in, you're just being impatient. Good luck.

Everyone keeps talking about the big three, and I was just wondering what are the Big three?? I am using Rogain and Nizoral, but what is the third one????

A ketoconazole based shampoo. Your choices are Revita (with a bunch of other proven hair growth ingredients and doesn't have the undesireable lauryl/laureth sulfates) and Nizoral (just ketoconazole w/the lauryl/laureth sulfates)

I think it's finasteride (sp?) or propecia.

Woops, he said he's on nizoral. That's right, the last bit of the Big 3 would be using an internal that reduces DHT such as finasteride (or dutasteride for some).

I'm on 200mg spironolactone as well. I'm a chic, so taking the other two is not advisable. Plus, insurance covers spironolactone whereas it won't the others. I wonder if spironolactone is effective for men too?

Some men use spironolactone, though only the very brave (or stupid?) souls try as much as 200mg. For men spironolactone has a pretty undesirable side effect in our upper body region. I wonder if it has that same side effect on women?

Topical spironolactone is used by many though and I believe is not systemically absorbed so there's not many sides from topical spironolactone. I think most here would advise using topical spironolactone first rather than taking it internally.

The side effects I've heard of spironolactone (in women) is high thirst, needing to pee a lot, possibily raising the potassium levels, feeling more tired/fatigued... those are what I've heard. I've had no side effects from it. I've been on 200mg since Jan of this year. Like all other meds/treatments, this thing is said to take a year or more to see any real effects.

to the origional poster, you are supposed to apply half a cup full of the foam twice a day. If 3 bottles of foam are lasting you 5-6 months you are using TOO LITTLE. I have my calendar marked on the 17th of every month, if my foam lasts less or more than that date, then I know I am using too much or too little.

It’s somewhat effective for hair loss, but the side effects for men totally suck!
I gather they are different than what I posted? Aside from this, is spironolactone just as good as finasteride/propecia?

in the usage of minoxidil like in rogain, it says if you have no signs of growth in 3-4 months you should stop using the minoxidil because if you se no growth or improvement you wont. finasteride you should use for at least 1 year to se improvements. GL
If you stop minoxidil you will only loose the small hairs you have gained.
and it will take about 3 months for the minoxidil hair to fall out.
