I have been on finasteride since I was 19. Im 27 now and it has worked great. However 6 months ago my hair started falling out like crazy. It was falling all over the scalp (including the nape, the side of my heads, the top of my head, the crown ... everywhere!!). I have lost around 40% density all around. At the peak I lost around 400 hairs per day... I still shed like crazy.

I went to a dermatologist 1 months ago that specialises in hair loss and she checked me with some special device and noticed that there was no miniaturisation and no current signs of androgenic hairloss. She said its telogen effluvium and took 30+ tests which included (WBC, Iron, Vitamin D, thyroid etc.) The tests came back with extremely low vitamin D and abnormal thyroid levels. I found the thyroid levels odd since I had checked them a couple of weeks prior at a clinic and they turned out normal. After this result I went, a couple of weeks later, I went and got tested twice more (once at a endocrinologist that specialises in thyroid issues). Both tests came back normal. So 3/4 tests show me with normal thyroid functions. How is this even possible?

I also developed SD or psoriasis at the back of my scalp. It was red and painful. But I got that fixed with cortisone and now Im using ACV + Keto which is keeping it completely gone. Im also on vitamin D supplements.

Anyways with all of this Im still shedding hair like crazy and I dont know what to do. I switched to Dutasteride 4 months ago (take it everyday) just to be safe. But its not helping since I apparently have telogen effluvium. How much longer till this nightmare ends? My confidence has gone out the roof. I feel suicidal.

Its also worth to note that Ive developed sleeping issues in the past 2 years. And some nights I slept only 2 hours. And I also had periods where I would stress out over it and have full on psychotic meltdowns for weeks straight and also drink myself to sleep after being up for 30+ hours. However Ive worked on fixing my sleep and reducing my stress and its much better now. I wonder if that may be the cause. Has anyone experienced something similar? Is there a way out?

tl;dr
1. Finasteride for 8 years
2. Massive hairshed for 6 months, 400+ hairs per day - all over the scalp (including nape and sides)
3. Hair specialist diagnosed me with Telogen Effluvium
4. Switched to Dutasteride 4 months ago
5. Severe sleep issues + psychological stress prior to hairloss
6. Still shedding.

This picture was like 2 months ago so its much worse now. I went from having a normal haircut to one of those geeky dumb and dumber, Jim Carrey, haircuts to cover up the loss eveywhere.

But if in 6 months your hair still continue to shed I would just tell you to stop duta and to another solution like a hair unit or just to focus on other things until there is a future better treatment...

Listen and listen good. I had telogen effluvium due to unchecked stress as well as low vitamin d.

Hwre is what you are gonna do. First and Foremost. Realize most of it will come back but you need to fix your sleep and stress.

I had the same problem. For my anxiety I took Magnesium Glycinate, Gaba supplement, and two cups of chamomile per day. Not only was my stress stalled, but it helped my sleep.

2.... you need to take 10000 to 20000 iu of vitamin d everyday. That also should help your stress by increasing serotonin.

Get to it buddy

By the way get to an endocrinologist to check for a thyroid condition that is hard to spot. Called Graves Disease. Just because thyroid comes back normal does Not mean you dont have a thyroid problem. My mom has hypothyroid symptoms but normal levels. Hypothyroid medicatiom helped her

Thanks this gives me hope. I just buzzed off all my hair yesterday so that I dont have to deal with thin looking hair and its a relief even though i hate the look. Not many people on here acknowledge that men can lose hair from these type of things so its hard to get help!

I already take vitamin D supplements. Doctor prescribed me with 4000 IU per day.. Perhaps I should increase it then. I will try all those things you did to lower my stress. Hopefully they will help me as well. I appreciate the reply a lot!

I went to a endocrinologist and they found nothing. Its very odd. All my results have been fine except for one. But Im going to do a 5th test soon just to be on the safe side.

How'd you end up going with dutasteride? I've been on finasteride for over 10 years and thinking of making the change. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

If you started taking finasteride at 19 obviously you have very aggressive hair loss. You’ve been taking it for 8 years. That’s awesome but it’s probably stopped working mate. Shed is your male pattern baldness picking back up. A hellava lot of the population is vitamin D deficient and it usually doesn’t cause Telogen Effluvium. Those supps suggested are amazing for sleep but I doubt they will do anything for your shed.

What happened before the molt started? Injury, infection, medication (other than finasteride)? Has itching appeared, any changes with the scalp that were not there before?

The problem is that if finasteride helped you, then this hints at a connection with male pattern baldness. Androgenetic Alopecia can be exacerbated by chronic disease or trauma, infection, etc. The mechanism is not completely clear to me, but this is what I have encountered and have been struggling with for 3.5 years.

Increase the dose of finasteride, if you took 1 mg, then up to 2-2.5 mg, look at the situation for 2 weeks, a month. I would recommend omega 3 (personally, it works in my case), I also use niacin, but I will not advise him. Analysis for vitamin B12, if stress and nerves, it is likely that it is lowered. Cortisol reduces the activity of immune cells, so it's not just about hair, against this background you can pick up any sore, which you can then try to cope with all your life. Cortisol is not blocked just like that, but it is activated - easily, if stress is strong, block it with medication, of course, consult a doctor with this issue.
