Here's My Story

How you guys doing? My name in Eddie, I'm 23 years old. I started noticing some real thinning about a year and a half ago, and it's gotten to the point that for the last year I completly changed my hairstyle. I used to do the straight up spikes, but then I noticed my hairline receding and the thinning up top made my scalp very visible. I'm sure I dont have to tell anyone here, that really sucked. I finally got to the derm in early June and he gave me a presciption for proscar. I actually couldn't be happier just knowing I was finally doing something about it. So I've been taking it everyday, and although I dont notice much of a difference one or two people says it looks like my hair is getting thicker. I'm currently contemplating whether or not to start minoxidil or not. Now that the foam came out, I might give it a shot. I was hesitant to do the liquid minoxidil because of the drying time but at this point I'll do anything to be able to do my hair like I used to. You know that's the first time I really told the story of my hair loss, and I kinda feel like crap now. So thanks for listening (or reading) and feel free to comment.

eddie,

if your hair isn't getting worse on proscar then honestly i'd give the proscar a year before adding minoxidil. you may get some solid regrowth from proscar but if you start minoxidil now then you won't know whether it's the minoxidil or the finasteride giving you the regrowth. minoxidil may do nothing for you. by waiting on it you can determine how the proscar does for you then decide whether or not to add the minoxidil. it is a much bigger pain than popping a pill. if your hair is not getting worse on proscar then the minoxidil will be just as effective next June as it is today.

also, i'd use nizoral 1% shampoo if you aren't already. it is a good shampoo for hair loss because it can increase the thickness and diameter of hair. buy it at your local supermarket/pharmacy and use a teaspoons worth every 3 days and leave it in your hair for 5 minutes before rinsing out. just use it in place of your normal shampoo every 3 days as a substitute for your normal shamp and follow it up with any conditioner. ignore this advice if you already using it.

Yeah I was just reading a couple days ago that I should be using Nizoral. I just haven't gotten around to picking it up yet, but I'm planning on it. I know what your saying about waiting, and the rational part of me was just telling my fiance 2 days ago that I was gonna wait about a year to see what the proscar does on its own. But then I'm like why not do everything you can now. So I go back and forth on it. I know it's a long process and I'm realistic about what either or both of them will do. It's just so frustrating sometimes

i totally undersatnd eddie. i just started avodart and keep going back and forth in my head about whether or not i should add minoxidil. but i always come back to the fact that it's a pain and i won't know which product is giving me which benefit if i start using things without giving previous products time to work. minoxidil is a huge pain compared to taking a pill as you know so honestly i would just wait. i know it's frustrating but what would be more frustrating is wasting year after year applying minoxidil to maintain your regrowth that you thought was from it but was actually from your proscar while minoxidil did nothing for you. that would be a real shame.

patience is the key to any regimen and just be glad that you are on the proscar right now and your balding appears to have stopped for the time being because of it.
