My mom went on a cruise last fall. It was about the same time of the Norwalk virus on the cruise ships. She got very ill. When she got home we thought it may be the cruise ship virus. I read that it lasts 2-3 days. Well, hers lasted 2 months. She said she did drink the water in Mexico like they told her not to. That is my mom for you. Right at that time she started losing her hair. She is still noticing she is losing some hair. Her hairline is receding above the temples. Luckily she has very thick hair. She is able to cover it up. I cant tell until she pulls her hair back. I can tell it is really bothering her. I just want to find out anything I can for her. She doesnt know I am doing this. I just am curious if an illness that bad can cause hair loss? She was very, very sick during that time. Also, is there any help for her?
thanks

Help

Unfortanately, your mom really needs to go to a doctor. Tell her not to wait. She doesn't want to wake up one day and 50% of her hair is gone. And trust me with hair loss you just never know.

She should start by going to a dermatologist. And tell her that she needs to be really educated prior to the visit. She might have to go to a few dermatologists before she is able to find a good one. She also needs to get her blood work done. If she goes to the home page of this web site it talks about what steps and tests a woman should take to help her with her hair loss.

Unfortanately, not a lot is known. Taking vitamins and changing her diet can help. She may need to take some medication. spironolactone is sometimes prescribed in women with Androgenetic Alopecia. I think her situation maybe temporary and mother nature will correct itself.
