i started on avodart in 2003 for six months my hair was great, didnt worry about a thing when it came to hairloss. I started using unitedpharmacies dutas after that and about 2 months ago i decided my hair wasnt getting anywhere.....if anything it was getting a little worse. I doubled my daily dose of dutas and it made me horribly ill. So, i switched back to avodart once every second day rougly 5 weeks ago. As soon as i started - bang - horror shed. Why did this never happen on dutas? (fake and dodgy dutas from unitedpharmacies perhaps) I am stressing out....my hair is as thin as could be, i can't remember shedding like this on avodart when i first started, i dont know, maybe i did. How long could i expect this to last for?

Thanks

Things are pretty unknown when it comes to shedding from finasteride/dutasteride, especially dutasteride. Some people don't even think they should cause a shed.

Are the results of the shedding visible at all yet? If so, where are you losing hair?

Are you using minoxidil?

Perhaps you should consider it...

Not only will it amplify the benefits of dutasteride, but minoxidil, itself, has properties that will keep the follicle from dying.

Minoxidil will allow for better treatment from Avodart.

As for me, my friend, I started shedding around month 5 on dutasteride, and it really picked up around month 6... I am about 8/9 months into treatment. Let's see, I started December 2, 2005, so that would put me at almost 9 months.

I have yet to see a stop to this 4-month+ shed.

@aussieavodart: stick with it. Be strong. The hair will regrow!

@Aplunk1: nice to hear from u! Your shedding around month 5 did last 4 weeks? I have a shedding since about 2-3 weeks. My front looks thin a bit but it could be cause rest is getting thicker.

I have yet to see a stop to this 4-month+ shed.
What do you mean with this?

Jacky, good to hear from you, my friend.

I hope treatment is helping you. :)

I mean that I have been shedding for about 4 months now... It started at month 5, and I am at month 9... So I have been shedding for about 4 months and continue to do so.

perhaps your genetics just suck so much that you had a shed coincidentally and are blaming it on the drug instead of on your own genes?

hmmmm i dont thinkk so

some of my hairs when on dutas were brittle and stiff......as soon as i switched back to avodart they went really soft,im talking about terminal hairs here and my leg hair as well

and also when i increased my dutas dose to two .5mg tablets per day i got horribly ill

OMG, sounds not good. How do you realize your shedding? Thinning??? Or hair in the shower or what?

Overall, a loss of density and scalp coverage... You got it... more hairs on the hands, comb, forehead, etc.

I hope you don't get a serious shed, Jacky.

I have no serious shed, but i have one since some weeks. More hair in the shower but still no ones resting in the comb. Before i started finasteride in 2001 i had lots of hair rested in the comb.

My front was thin before using avodart - i cannot say if it thinned out more due to shedding. But now there are coming thin new hairs in the front even in the "first line" of the front. Those hairs are getting longer - this means that they stay alive. If there come more of it (and i have good hopes) and the get thicker (what is usual in a hair life cycle) then my front will look better!
