So I'm in a predicament where my dad has insane hair genetics - NW1 at age 50 years old with zero loss, but my maternal grandfather did start losing his hair starting in his 30s and I'm not quite sure what Norwood he is now in his 80s but he definitely had a good bit of hair loss, albeit, it started in his 30s and 40s, and it was very slow. Every other male relative in my family is solid NW1s. So i'd say my family history is relatively strong (?) aside from the maternal grandfather, which unfortunately is the kicker. My maternal grandmother has really good hair as well, but I'm not sure how much that correlates.
Since the maternal grandfather and your own father are probably the most influential in determining male pattern baldness, does that make my chance a coinflip? I'm currently 20 years old with an NW0.5/1 that hasn't changed since age 14, but my hair is extremely fine and straight and seems scarily thin. However, it's always been like this. Is a NW0.5/1 at age 20 any good? Will I likely have severe balding at this level? Or are most people who are going to go severely bald already seeing a receding hairline by 20? To be clear, I don't really care about being bald when I get older, its more so the idea of balding as a college kid that freaks me out. Once I am older it will also be a lot more normal, I never see any balding kids at my school.
What are some indicators that you guys have observed make somebody more likely to go bald in the future? Possible traits, or whatnot. Interestingly enough, I went to get my haircut at the same place as my dad once, and the barber told me my hair was identical to his, at least in terms of where the hairline was and how it parted/grew/whorls. I do think my dad has thicker hair than me but I am unsure. I definitely inherited my dad's facial hair as well. Does this correlate with a male pattern baldness gene? Since I have similar hair?
Another interesting trait I read that predicts baldness is height, which I also have going for me: I am 6'0.
I also heard beard growth and body hair growth is usually correlated to balding, and that actually checks out with my family - my maternal grandfather could grow a beard in his mid-teens but my dad couldn't until his mid-20s. As for me, I still can't grow a beard of much facial hair at all at 20, and I'm not hair at all. I think I also saw that having a lot of acne could mean you have high DHT levels as well. I also happen to have the clearest skin you can find, and rarely get pimples. So, if I were to guess my DHT levels are probably pretty low.
I'm just a very anxious person and I think in black and white, is there anything that ya'll have observed (anecdotes are OK!), in regards to male pattern baldness predictors?
I'm just really hoping I got my dad's hair loss genetics, but everywhere I see brings up the damn maternal grandfather sh*t.
