How do you deal with mirror syndrome and depression

How do you forget your hairloss, at least for a short time? I mean when you're in that cycle of looking in the mirror, and that cold depression when you realize you can see even more scalp than usual?

For me, the best way to "Reset" is to just get a short haircut. Or at the very least, short on top, buzzed on the sides so I don't have that big *** dracula look. It actually makes me feel a little better when I have a decent haircut. Product helps too, anything to keep it neat and dense.

Mechanical tasks also help. Cleaning the bathroom, fixing/modding a PC, cooking, etc. Walks used to help get my mind off my image but I always end up just thinking too much.

All of these solutions are temporary. I've actually been thinking of shaving my head again and covering my mirror up. It's getting bad again.

I deal with it by avoiding mirrors and working as much as possible. When I do look in mirrors I make sure the lighting is flattering, to convince myself it isn't as bad as it really is.

Not a problem for me. Most mirrors break as soon as I look at them.

Wow, it's shocking how much we all have in common...I thought I was the only one that was avoiding mirrors and not looking unless its in flattering light.

Mother ****ing disease. I swear. You guys are awesome.

The vanity lights above my mirror stay off most of the time I'm hanging over my sink. Truth be told I can barely look at the friggin' security monitors that hospitably greet you as you enter eg; just -about- everywhere.

I only look in mirrors when I have to. I used to use a hand mirror to look at the back of my hair in part hoping the spot had disappeared and in part like a person gawks at a car accident. I would see the spot and get a sinking feeling. I just stay away from mirrors now unless I need one.

I did avoid mirrors for the first three years, until I finally decided that I am done with running from it, and do something from it. My friends, of course, turned me into a joke and it did sting at first although I don't tell them that. But after a while I've developed the humor for it too. Learning to laugh at yourself helps a lot. But finally deciding to act on it and get treatment is a big step and is starting to build my confidence back.

This is a funny one, I was waiting for a date to arrive one evening so thought to use the toilet in the bar. It had these mirrors that were all angled so you could see yourself from multiple angles, i'm used to seeing myself from the front only.

I have to wonder if there exists anyone(non-balding) who's pointed out their poor neighbor's baldness not for the purpose of mocking them, but simply because they genuinely thought that it was in the subject's best interest to seek immediate treatment?

I avoid looking in mirrors, and I also avoid activities that requires me to look in the mirror - like dressing up and going to parties, church etc.

Yes, there could be a few genuine, thoughtful non balders out there.. But in my experience whenever a full head points out someones baldness, it's usually in a mocking way.

When I look in the mirror at my bald head, a great depression hits me.
I look in the mirror at least five times a day and looking in the mirror only makes things worse for me psychologically, I am a norwood 6 and I'm losing ground.
At this point in my life, I'd be happy with maintaining a norwood 6 and wearing a hairpiece.

what's stopping you from wearing a hair peice?

Why put yourself through pain.

Get a hair transplant to reinforce the sides, and construction of temple points. Wear a piece and be free already

I never encountered a well intentioned one yet either. It confounds me how even my family sounded so barefoot, backwards about male pattern baldness in the rare instances the uncomfortable discussion surface.
It may be time to order myself a custom tee with the bold letters embossed across the front that reads, "It's a BALD thing...Right? I knew you really didn't wanna understand".

I'm not even going to bother trying to elicit empathy from them. They don't give a sh!t because it aint them. And we didn't give a sh!t either until we ourselves were balding. It is what it is.

Thanks for the reply shookwun, I never thought of getting hair transplants for the sides of my hair, that's good advice.
I tried wearing hairpieces off line and didn't have much luck, so my next step is to get a hairpiece professionally done, I am of african descent so it's been a hassle for me to find the right hairpiece with the right type of hair.

It was devastating seeing my scalp in mirror. What was even more devastating was a lot people telling me that i was going bald.

THIS. People started telling me about my receding hairline when I was 14... I was just a kid. Those people don't realize that they were the catalysts of the biggest obsession of my life and they are the reason why I check my hair in the mirror every day. They were like "dude, you're going bald" as if I didn't have my own eyes. I felt so powerless against that remark. Why did they feel the need to point out my imperfections? And they are the same people that tell you to just shave it all off.

I use this forum to vent.
