I think the residue left from hairstyling products like wax, clay and hairspray have affected my scalp badly. What do you guys use to wash them off properly? Is there some kind of special shampoo you guys can recommend?

I find the key is to use water based, rather than wax based products.

However, if you must use was based products, I think "clarifying" shampoos are the ones you're after.

Apply a very small amount of shampoo to the hair to get rid of the majority of the hair product, then apply a second amount to cleanse the remaining amount. I have found this gets rid of everything for me. Hair 'puttys' are the most difficult to get out, IMO.
