How Many Hairs Shed And What It Tells You.

So I've come to realize that anything over 10-20 hairs a day in males is most likely cause for concern.....men do not lost 50-100 hair like women. So if your wondering if your balding then just check how many hairs your shedding, if it's more then 20 a day you most likely have some issue regarding hair loss.

Men lose just as many hair as women (around 100 a day) when they are not balding. For women it just looks like a lot more since they have longer hair and some of the hair they 'lose' is not actual a hair that did shed but that did break, especially if they have coarse hair.

Actually that's false....what about the comb test where men only lost on average 10 hairs after combing for 60 seconds. Men shouldn't lose as many as women. I think alot of men with hairloss use that as a way to cope but if you look at research it's clear that shouldn't be the case.... I'm just trying to better understand the mechanism for hair shedding and I do value your input....

I can't believe this is even a topic of discussion. The comb test is 60 seconds. There are 24 hours in a day during all of which you are shedding hair. Why does anyone buy female dogs if male dogs don't shed?
Why are you comparing dogs has no relevance....I'm just saying if your a male with medium to short hair and your noticing 50-100 hairs a day, THERE is something WRONG don't be in denial.....before I started worrying about hairloss I'd lose maybe at most 20 hairs showering, drying and styling my hair... So I definitely think if your losing more than 20-40 as a male then your experiencing male pattern baldness....

You're ignorant. Nobody counts all of their hairs unless they are balding. You have no idea how many hairs you lost before you were balding because you never counted them. Most of the hairs we shed are random throughout the day. Read up on how hair works. I lose more hairs than that in a day just in my donor region, and it is thick as ever.

  • 150,000 hairs on the head
  • one hair cycle lasts 3-5 years
  • 150000h/1095d =137 hairs shed every single day
If you only shed 20 hairs per day that means your hair cycle is 20 years and your hair would grow to 20 feet long. Does men's hair grow longer than women's? Think this stuff through before you post it.

No that is not false and @pegasus2 already explained why. You do not only lose hair when you comb it. The hair you lose you will lose constantly during the day. Many things can influence how much hair gets stuck into your comb that have absolutely nothing to do with shedding. If you have washed your hair that day you will find less hair in your comb. If you have been outside the whole day in the wind you will find less hair in the comb. If your hair is silky vs coarse you will find less hair. The study you posted yourself literally says this as well.

Your math is actually wrong. Typical hair cycles are 4-7 years and the average head of hair is 100,000. So there may be some standing to the argument.

Then my math wouldn't be wrong, the input would be wrong. It's actually not wrong either, it depends on the race, hair color, and individual.

If you are a blonde, you likely have the most hair at birth at around 150,000 follicles.

The growth phase, or anagen phase, lasts an average of 3-5 years

Your math is seriously wrong if you think you can input your figures 4-7 years and 100,000 hairs, and come up with 20 hairs per day.

I'm not arguing I'm just saying that from the stats I looked up it says on average humans have 100k hairs so the 150 is either Uber thick or blonde and thin. Also the anagen is 4-7 years not 3-5. So how can I take your answer as fact if your numbers are already scued in your favor.

Your just being to optimistic because your hairloss has got the best of you. If you do the correct math with 100k hairs and 7 years it comes to 39.8 hairs shed daily. If you do 5 year cycles with 100k youd shed 55 a day realistically....it's easy to cope but don't let that fool you into believing your in normal ranges if your shedding in excessive of 40-50 a day....your losing ground.

I do agree with the general statement that your shedding is a give away of your current status. What amount says what? That is individual.

It is true that I never counted hairs before hairloss but I do now on treatments and I can gauge when I should be concerned or not. Shed fluctuations tell me a lot.
I used to have my hair down my shoulders from my childhood years to early adult life. I remember once, when I was around 10 or 11, combing my hair after a shower and when I looked down on the floor it was covered with hair. I panicked and asked my mom why my hair was falling and then she told me it was normal. From this day to my 17 my hair kept thickening, to the point it was really hard to comb it even when wet.

I used to tell myself that it's something normal; and maybe it is. My younger brother washes his hair twice a week and gets a hairball every time. However, when you face hair loss problems, each strand that falls makes you afraid that it won't come back later, or that it will come back miniaturized. It's really depressing to be honest
