How to apply spironolactone topically?

Hello I'm 19 and considering to try topical spironolactone 5% for my hairline since i cant get prescriptions for finasteride. My hairloss is only at the hairline and the docs believed that finasteride would be ineffective and risky for my current loss. Anyways I was looking at spironolactone cream at genhair since they have august sale and so thought maybe this will help my hair. I was wondering about the application procedures such as:
how many times a day?
wet/dry hair?
how long should i keep it on?
how much should i put ( is there any fixed amount like minoxidil or is it variable)?

Thanks for your time and any replies will be appreciated.

Hey,

I´m 21 and I´ve just ordered 3 tubs of spironolactone cream. It usually takes around 10 days to arrive..

I´m planning on applying it once a day for a week at first, just a thin layer.. if I don´t notice any sides, I`ll start applying it twice a day (morning before uni, and after I shower at night..

I notice quite a number of people notice some side effects, which they attribute to their use of topical spironolactone.. So I think it´s vital to take it easy on the cream at first, and go from there, if you don´t experience any unwanted effects..

Also, I´m using 2% ketoconazole cream.. I don´t get any sides from it and I think it really helps along with 2% nizoral.. with frequent use, naturally

Hope this helps,

JJ

Thanks for the reply but I thought spironolactone had no sides... I guess nothing is truly side-less. Anywayz I was thinking about applying twice but I guess its a good idea to start at once daily and move up from there after awhile. I was just wondering how long would I have to keep it on for. Is it like an hour thing or like couple hours like minoxidil.

Yeah I wondered the same thing and just ordered spironolactone. Why spironolactone is not approved for male pattern baldness I have no idea but I wish I could buy it from a real store instead of shady place like genhair. You would think 20 years after finasteride we would have a decent topical at a reasonable price to stop androgens, but you would be wrong. Unless you want to turn your basement into a lab mixing your own batch of RU or pay insane amounts of money to buy it. At that point I would just say good bye hair nice knowing you.

You can also buy spironolactone from this site and minoxidilsolutions.com (the "new" Dr. Lee copy site).

I'm thinking about picking up some spironolactone to go with minoxidil. It says it works best when used with minoxidil. I'm going to use it at night but do I apply it before or after minoxidil and how long between each application? I know I've read it on here but can't seem to find the answers.

You can read here for the directions on how to create a non smelling topical spironolactone solution - [attachment=0:47476uen]Topical Spironolactone - Details.pdf[/attachment:47476uen]. Pills can be used to create the powder needed. Several examples are given for the process as well ingredients that can be used for certain desired effects.

How often are you supposed to use spironolactone and how long do you leave it on? I read if you put a dot of it on your head it ends up spreading to cover about 1 square inch is that true or does it need a thin layer everywhere?

The amount used would depend on how the topical spironolactone is made, i.e. a gel, lotion, cream I would do exactly as you suggest and start off with a small amount and see how far it spreads and apply more if needed.

Some people only apply the spironolactone on their problem areas while others apply it on their entire head. If you have long hair it can be a challenge to apply it on your scalp, in this case you might have to take the time to part you hair and apply.

I myself plan on applying all over so that my entire scalp can benefit.

As for the length of time to leave on I would say every 12 hours. As there is a small chance for systematic side effects. If you have a solution that smells then you might want to apply it the 12 hours you are home sleeping.

Do you apply minoxidil with the spironolactone?

I'm trying to figure out if I should apply the spironolactone before or after minoxidil at night and how long in between applications.

I would say apply spironolactone before, but that's me. I think it is drying in 10 minutes or so.

This morning I applied spironolactone S5 and about 15-20 min later I applied Kirkland 5 % Minoxidil.

The easiest way is to take a shower or wet your hair.
Use a towel but keep the moist in hair and on the scalp.
Apply spironolactone cream.

Hello guys first of all thanks for all the replies and information.

I decided not to buy the spironolactone from genhair due to the shadiness. I might regret this but I felt a bit paranoid about the authenticity of the product. I think I'll buy a single batch from this site and see how it goes. I plan to only use it on my hairline because that's the only concerned area for now. As for the combination with minoxidil considering how I don't really need regrowth since I didn't lose much I'll hold it off, because minoxidil is very taxing to apply and if it isn't applied properly then it can be ineffective and even make the situation worse. minoxidil is more ideal for regrowth rather than to maintain or at least that's the impression I got after lurking on this website for months.

FlashFirez:

In my opinion it is much easier to apply minoxidil than spironolactone cream, especially if you have longer hair.

I've been using minoxidil for three years now with minimal hassle.

Besides your view on minoxidil as primary used for regrowth, I recommend it since it is easy to use, and in this context, one of the cheapest products we got out there.

That's interesting ( no sarcasm)..... as to how minoxidil is easier than spironolactone. Perhaps it is as I have no experience in applying either of the product but wouldn't spironolactone help my current situation better since it acts as an antiandrogen. minoxidil sort of scares me as people have had massive sheds on these with limited results and repeating shed cycles and my situation isn't too bad as I'm on the early stages just some temple recession and a bit of hairline thinning. I have naturally thick hair so its really unnoticeable to others. Ofcourse having minoxidil thicken my hair up would be great but I don't know if I should take the risk yet. Also the greasiness worries me as I only wash my hair once a day during shower so I'd have quite greasy and messy hair due to minoxidil. BTW my hair is usually 1-1.5in top and #3 on side idk if that's considered short, medium, or long.

Like you said, spironolactone is to slow down/stop hair loss and minoxidil is strictly for regrowing hair. The combination of both works best. You can find non-greasy, fast drying minoxidils (check out minoxidilmax 5% fast dry).

BTW, I have been using spironolactone for the past week and like it. I know results can't happen that quickly but I would swear that I am losing less hair when showering or rubbing product in my hair. I rub in the spironolactone at night and wait 15-30 minutes and apply minoxidil on top of it.
