I am not totally bald. I still have plenty of hair left, but my left side of the temple is starting to thin. I don't know what to do! I have been always confident about my looks, but now I am not so sure. My estimates are by 2015 I go totally bald. I am trying to take steps to prevent my balding any further but I am confused on what course of action I should take so I thought I would join the forum and ask help here.

If you haven't guessed already I am 19 years old. I am going to college and if I go bald I'll be the only one there without hair.

Anyway hello!

If you have plenty of hair left, then I don't think you will be bald by 2015. When I analysed my photos, I'd say my balding has started when I was 15-16 years old (I noticed that my temples started receding then)! It was year 2005-2006. Now I'm 22 and I'm quite heavily diffused in NW6 pattern, with Norwood 2-2,5 hairline. But it's nowhere near slick bald yet. So it has been 6-7 years and I'm still not bald. I consider my balding to be aggressive. Maybe you won't get thinning, just thick hair + receding. Since you started balding at 19, I think you'll be safe through the college (i. e. you won't go completely bald).

WHen it comes to treatment, people here will say the BIG 3 is your best bet.

BIG 3 is Finasteride (for example Propecia) +Minoxidil (for example Rogaine) + Ketoconazole (for example Nizoral shampoo).

However if you still have thick hair, then there's no need for you to use Minoxidil, since it's a growth stimulant.

Finasteride alone is going to be enough - it will keep what you have, and should thicken your existing hair, and can also give some regrowth if you're lucky.

Yes I have bought Nazoral Shampoo 1% and was hoping to buy Rogaine foam. I still have thick hair. And its not the temple that is thinning its my crown area sorry.

big three is definitely the way to go to keep keep your hair. with minoxidil, it feels pretty bad in hair but when u use it straight after a shower (ie when the hair is wet) it isn't as bad.

u wont neccessarily be bald that soon.

some ppl start balding and continue the same speed and go completely bald, while others recede a bit at that age then stay that way.

i for instance freaked out when i first receded at 18, but now im in 30's and still have alot left, allbeit with a receded hairline.

wat did ur dad do? how much hair has he now?, u may not follow his pattern as everyone has different genetic expression patterns of theyre parents ( some have moslty mums expression, some have mostly dads) but it is a bit of an indicator.

male pattern baldness is quite variable in it's speed . It often will start fast, then slow down, It can stop or come to a crawl for many years-mine pretty much stopped for about 10 years without any treatment.

There is a reasonable chance it could take you many decades to thin out.
I started receding in early '82 and 30 years later I am still only about a 3v.
