Probably to make them look more presentable and "redeemable" if that makes sense, like they may be losers but they don't look that bad or unlikable. While the losers who you are supposed to dislike often have a NW4+, so they look uglier and less likable and just overall more "loser-like".

1) The main villain, usually racist, a murderer, etc.
2) The guy who is a loser who you make fun of, the guy who is the punchline of jokes, i.e. George costanza.
3) The jacked hero in an action movie to defeat the other bald villain.

They can't just drop the weight. Because, in simple terms, fat people are addicts. Losing weight is like withdrawing from food. They need to change their entire mindset and lifestyle. Most people are weak.

Being fat is also the most socially accepted addiction. There isn't enough incentive to change.
