i think i should quit propecia

so ive been on propecia and minoxidil for more than 2 months now, and so far ive been seeing some sire effects:

theyre not AS bad as some of the horror stores i have read, but i have the same symptoms as some:

-watery semen
-some pain near my groin
-rarely get morning wood (sex drive lower)
-i think about sex a lot less

before i started propecia, i would wake up with morning wood almost every morning, and if i didnt masterbate for a few days i would pop a tent easily without much thought of sex.

now i dont get morning wood anymore and even when i daydream about having sex with a girl i dont get an erection easily, my grion area does feel aroused kinda but i have to actually concentrate to get at least a chubby.

i still can get erections if i play with my self or look at p**rn, but it takes awhile to actually get hard and its difficult to stay hard (have to keep playing with it and if i leave it alone for awhile it will subside)

ive started to take 25mg of zinc once a day (because it apparently boosts your sex drive), but its too soon to tell if its helping

and ive been doing kegels for about a month now, but like with the zinc im taking, im not sure if its helping either.

Im seriously thinking about stopping propecia because:

-i am 19 (heard that side effects are more common in younger males)
-i am a virgin (sadly, but im working on that)
-am am mostly balding in the front (and propecia works more in the rown area and not on your hairline)

and im on 5% minoxidil liquid with nizoral 2%, and vitamins (vit c, omega 3-6-9, and biotin with the zinc im taking)

i want to know if i should quit, because id rather be bald and functional, than have hair but also have a penis that doesnt work.

Been there myself.... I just gave it up...

You have to evaluate the pros and cons for yourself and choose whatever suits you best...

I'm also slightly concerned that you are taking finastride at such a young age. I think you should see a professional who can decide if you have an male pattern baldness or you are just becoming a man and losing all the baby hairs...

That's not a side effect of propecia

The key to losing your virginity would be not stressing it too much and just going with the flow.. It will happen...

ive been to a dermatologist and she says that its male pattern baldness (because my sides and back are really thick) and perscribed me minoxidil 5% and propecia.

which is wierd because i had an infected scalp for a long time which i thought it the reason why im losing hair but she said its not, ive also been taking doxycycline for my infected scalp so my scalp is whie and healthy again, but no real change to my hair.

ive heard that if some sort of glands in your scalp is red and infected you can start to lose hair, which the top of my scalp was red for grade 12 (and maybe grade 11), but it was worse in the crown area and not at the front so im not sure if this is why i started to lose hair.

and i should also note that ive had acne on my scalp for pretty much all of highschool and i picked at my scalp a lot during then. :shakehead:

and also the only person in my family that went bald at a young age (or went bald at all) is my uncle from my mothers side, who started losing hair around the same age as i am (after highschool or during the last years of high school).

so either your right, or i am REALLY unlucky and got the balding gene my one uncle has.

to be onest, i think its male pattern baldness because although my hairline is still the same, im losing hair at the front. when my hair is wet you can see a good ammount of my scalp at the front where my hairline is and not so much at the crown.

and i know virginity is not a side effect, im saying that its a reason why to quit propecia cause i want my first time to be memorable in a good way.

I don't know dude... people say the effects of propecia subside in time. Maybe you should just stick with it for a bit longer and see if they go away at all.

I used propecia for about 2 months, the libido wasn't so bad but it's different without it. I personally wouldn't like to go back to it again.

Talk to your dermatologist again and see what she thinks.

I'd get off it if I were you, and see if things revert back to normal. The longer you take it, the more chances for side effects due to messing with your hormones, destroying your prostate, depriving penile tissues of vital androgen (DHT) and nitric oxide, and much more.

Many men have experienced the same before you, your body is trying to tell you something. If things go back to normal you can always take finasteride again down the road -- which of course, is not recommended in my opinion, since the same side effects will likely just come back.

If the drug is causing you problems, get off it and see if they correct themselves. Seems pretty simple to me, but it's your life and your dick.

Thanks for posting your question here.

First off your infected scalp absolutely could have played a role in kickstarting this. If its thinning in a predictable pattern however, she's probably right that its androgenetic alopecia. They base their opinion on the design of the thinning. The shape.

My first question is - how long has your scalp been "well" ? If its been less than a year, its too soon to see your hair rebound, so that should be some good news. Give it time.

Secondly, get yourself on Nizoral shampoo immediately and use it once every 3 days. Its the holy grail in foundation for your regimen. Do not attempt to treat your hair loss without it. That goes for everyone here.

Lastly, you are right to listen to your body. If it has been more than 2 months and you're still seeing adverse reactions, you don't need to be on Propecia just yet. You can save it for when you are old and limp like the rest of us, from natural causes :) kidding... im only speaking for Cassin. :woot:

Rogaine Foam should be a great foundation, with nizoral shampoo religiously once every 3 days. Let it soak for the duration of your shower and try Jason thin to thick shampoo on off days. Remember to take pictures of where you're at right now to keep perspective on your progress. Give it a minimum of 6 to 10 months before you freak out. There will be sheds, and good days.

I would do the Rogaine and Nizoral regimen for now. If you want to add a topical version of Propecia, your best bet is Topical Spironolactone and Revivogen. Its adding another two topicals to the daily regimen, but it may be worth it for you. Revivogen can be reddish and a bit oily. Just try stuff out and let us know. You can always tweak things. But do the Rogaine Nizoral thing for now and give it time.

Another quick note: 25mg zinc daily is pushing it. 15mg is recommended daily allowance, and you get that and more from your food every day. Too much zinc can lead to copper deficiency. Once you dump the Propecia you wont need the zinc anymore. Seriously look into topical spironolactone. Its not a regrowth agent but it will help do Propecia's job without any internal side effects at all.

Good luck.

well the acne problem of my scalp is pretty much gone, and my dermatologist said that i shouldnt need to take doxycycline anymore because my scalp is white again.

onestly im not sure if my acne problem is the reason why im losing hair, only the top of my scalp was infected not the sides or back, so basically the area that you lose hair because of male pattern baldness was infected. but the crown was a lot more infected than my hair line and my hairline/ front/top of my scalp is where im losing hair and my crown area is perfectly fine.

do you think that maybe taking protien shakes and working out at the gym seriously might have activated the balding gene in me aswell? im thinking it might have because after a few months of wokring out and taking protien shakes was when i noticed i was losing hair. i still work out but i dont take protien shakes anymore.

ive been using nizoral for about a month now 3/4 times a week, and im using 5% minoxidil liquid and i still have been taking propecia, but this jason thin to thick shampoo your talking about, where would i be able to buy some? right now im using nioxin shampoo on off days but am thinking about switching to a shampoo with tea tree oil because apparently its good for your follicles and can help out with fighting against male pattern baldness.

the weird thing is, the side effects ive been experiencing have subsided quite a bit, not sure if the zinc is actually doing something or the sides are going away like how its explained in the propecia box.

Ive been waking up with morning wood more often and it doesnt take much effort to get aroused. last night when drunk at a restraunt party (had more alcohol than i should have so i was really drunk), i was sitting between two cute girls and just because of that i got a chubby/erection quite fast, which surprised me because being on propecia and being drunk should have made it impossible to get aroused, and even thinking about some attractive girls that are clothed i get aroused easily like i use to. :jump:

so hopefully, this is a good sign that the side effects are gone and wont come back and bite me in the *** later.
