Ideas for Charity work

I am looking to donate and do some charity soon but I am confused as to what causes I want to donate to. Some of my favorite causes are giving to the homeless, hunger, orphaned children, education and mentally and physically challenged (or diseased) and sometimes aged people. I have tried them all but sometimes I wonder where (or what field) my donations will make the most impact. What I ultimately want out of this is to help the most depressed and suffering souls and lift them out of their emoional or physical suffering, bring them relief (the more immediate the better ) I have often wondered what is the best or the most needy or worthy cause of them all. I would like to solicit opinions from you based on your past experiences or hearsay as to what cause you feel would be most worthy. I would appreciate if you can contibute some ideas.

PS :As far as how much I am looking to donate really depends on the situation but I am not wealthy. (so contibute ideas accordlingly)

Every cause is important...don't let anyone tell you 1 is more important than the other. If its important to you then thats good enough. Don't let someone bully you into thinking something you believe in is not as good as what they believe in.

Don't donate a penny. So much money is wasted.

Donate your time then if you feel comfortable with how they do things, then donate money.

Cassin, Thanks for replying but I feel you missed my original point. I am looking for ideas to donate to a cause and I want to know what or WHO according to YOU is the most depressed person or group who can use some financial/food or material help and WHY. for example is it leppers, or someone suffering from AIDs or the orphaned child of an AIDs victim etc... and maybe even the name of organisations who support suxch ppl. My end goal is to make sure my money is channeled or routed to the neediest people and every dollar is well worth it.

Holding unwanted babies at the hospital so they get the emotional support they need at an early age. I bet the long term returns as far as crime prevention, school success, etc would be astronomical. Head start programs for 3 year olds are estemated to return 16% per year if you take cost of them vs the monetary benefits to society. Way better than the stock market or any other investment.

If you can make $20 per hour at your job, and any unskilled person can hold a baby, I suggest you work and extra hour at your job, then donate (tax write off) $20 to pay 3 people $6.66 per hour each to hold 3 babies. Much better use of your skills. Now if holding the babies is therapudic to you and good for relaxing after work, then go ahead and do it yourself too.

Idea #1- Donate to MSF. They do important work.

Idea #2- Pay a Buddhist meditation teacher to attend the psychiatric or cancer ward of your local hospital (if the hospital administrators allow it and if meditation isn't already being taught). If the hospital doesn't allow it then try a prison.

either idea shouldn't cost you much.

Médecins Sans Frontières give health care for people in war zones, humanitarian disasters, impoverished countries etc

There is a worldwide directory of Buddhist organizations here. You could find one in your area and approach them and ask the monks/nuns/laytechers to give lessons in the hospital/prison/whatever, the monks near me teach at the local maximum security prison.

They should be able to do it for a small donation or whatever their transport costs are etc. If they refuse without good reason then you should make them feel as guilty as possible.

You may want to look at these articles as well-

The TIGER is in danger of extinction, due mostly to the Chinese belief that consuming Tiger body parts is beneficial, especially Tiger penis, which makes Chinese men more "virile". :jackit:

Tigers in India are being illegally slaughtered in order to feed this Chinese demand (although "officially" the Chinese have otlawed it ), and are also under pressure from a rising population encroaching into the few areas the Tigers have left.

I have been supporting the Tiger through the Environmental Investigation Agency, and a family run effort called "Life Force"

http://www.lifeforceindia.com/

Life Force was started by a British family who, after years of making donations, took the plunge and sold up everything in the UK to dedicate all their time and money to trying to save this awesome animal from extinction.

The crisis facing the Tiger is part of a wider environmental crisis, where population growth plays a huge, and unacknowleged part.
