I'm 18 Years Old, Should I Start Rogaine/minoxidil

Hello guys, I'm new to the forums and joined to get some insight from those who use Minoxidil suffering from male pattern baldness. Before I noticed my hair loss/thinning, I had extremely thick and course hair, which made it even more noticeable once it started. I first noticed it not long after my 15th birthday. It started so suddenly and it was rapid hair loss and thinning. My entire top scalp diffused thinned, I have clear thinning on the crown, mid scalp, hairline, it hit me very hard. Not long after this started I went to the dermatologist and they were pretty useless, said it's probably genetic and they took blood work which came out normal and said I had seborrheic dermatitis, which they gave me a Keto 2% shampoo to treat (which is the only thing I use for my hair loss). Now I am 18, almost 19 in May and I am considering going to further lengths in trying to stop my hair loss/thinning and possibly regrow hair and add some density I had originally. My hair currently is very thinned out and it's pretty obvious if my hair is not decently styled, I do have recession also. When the hair is wet it literally looks as if I am bald. Nonetheless, I still seem to have coverage. I'm thinking about starting Minoxidil but I am bit worried about it. I know it's something you have to commit to everyday, but is it worth it? I've heard people say how bad their hair sheds when they use it, which I know is normal for it but still stressing to hear. Does it really stop working after a year of use? What happens if I don't use it for say a month? Any abnormal side effects? I feel like I would be a good responder to it but my doubts and fears keep holding me back from using it. Some might recommend propecia but I feel I may be too young even if I am done with puberty, I don't want to risk the sides with propecia. I may try it in the future but for now I'm thinking of Minoxidil and Keto and see how that goes. Any other advice and information would greatly be appreciated.

Okay I uploaded some pictures. They're not the best pictures but I took them in very revealing light and messed my hair so you can all get an idea of it. Obviously I seem to be a diffuse thinner, looks pretty bad. Any advice guys? I'm going to see another dermatologist soon as it's been a while and I'm thinking of starting Rogaine Foam 5% along with the keto. I'm thinking of holding off on Propecia because of the sides and also since I'm so young.

I'd say the crown looks like it's starting to go. I'd personally start applying there first and watch the temples in the mean time.

That's what I thought, I should also apply it on my hairline and mid scalp area as well too though, right? Those areas are thinning badly too and I have diffuse thinning/hair loss all over except the back and sides.

It's hard for me to see that from your photos. It wouldn't hurt to talk to the doctor to also get on finasteride. There's a reason so many people use both midoxnil and finesteride around here.

I'll ask and see what they say about it. It just worries me seeing as how I'm so young I don't want to risk messing up my body or anything.

Precisely why only a doctor should ultimately say, however, I wish I would have at least tried it when I was your age to see how I reacted.

I waited till I was 25.. I would still have so much more native hair. I just got a 2500 graft FUE transplant 4 months ago that probably could've been prolonged had I taken it earlier.

Shouldn't I first use minoxidil/keto and see how that goes instead? Maybe it'll help and buy me time then I could possibly get on finasteride once I'm a bit older. Have you had sides with it? But I'll go ahead and ask the derm

f*** man, I feel sorry for you. I'm quite young too - 21, but I think your hairloss is worse... You should probably try finasteride + minoxidil + dermarolling. When is your 19th birthday? There are some people who took finasteride successfully being 18 year old.. It's your decision. How is your psyche btw? Because if you are weak psychologically, you have bigger chances to see side effects. Best of luck in this fight.

Rogaine/Minoxidil and DHT blocker now mate...jump in Nizoral routine once or twice per week. Try liquid first so you can get better scalp coverage (see how your scalp reacts). Your hair is blond...so your balding never be very obvious. Get nice shorter haircut..find good trusted barber, keep sides short and top longer to give your hair extra volume. Avoid hair gels. Get some matt paste to style. Consider hair concerlars. Best of luck mate.

Really you should consult with a real physician but if you're asking my honest opinion I would start finasteride now.

Like I said. I wish I stared at 18. Did I get sides? Yes, a little at first. I researched it so much I tripped myself out. I got moody. I am a former addict and it felt like I was just getting sober all over again. I had to make a do or die decision.

I read a thread on these forums where some guy basically in a nutshell said either learn to suck it up psychology and keep your hair or get off of it due to your "sides" and accept being hald.

I'm guessing you know which decision I made. I'm now 27 and have been taking them for 2.5 years. I'm happily married and have a good sex life.

Final note, exercise is so important. Regardless if you take finasteride or not. Changes your mood to lean towards being positive.

Yeah man, it's pretty shitty. I turn 19 in May. And I tend to be prone to anxiety so I'm hoping if I do get finasteride I don't react bad to it which I'll consult with the dermatologist. Hopefully nizoral/minoxidil and dermarolling will help

So you think it would make a difference if I use liquid or foam minoxidil? My hair is sparse and thinned all on top I don't think I'd have a problem applying the foam. What DHT blockers would you recommend other than finasteride? (I am considering finasteride but I'll ask the derm)

Well DHT blocker is your choice mate.....I really hate suggesting as everyone is different. I mentioned liquid minoxidil as your hair loss area is kind of bigger then just normal vertex therefore liquid with dropper might be perfect solution to target it. You can use foam at the mornings and liquid at nights hence liquid takes longer to dry. Remember minoxidil does not work for everyone. You might want to test it for 3 months and see if you get results if yes then add DHT blocker. It's a real shame as you are very young mate...feel sorry for chaps like you. I am almost 40..so it's all different for me....
